I fixed my laptop!
« on: December 05, 2006, 03:30:20 am »
I don't know what I did, so technically I didn't fix it myself, but eh.. it works. Let's see how long he lives this time.

For those who forgot, specs:

IBM ThinkPad 600
Intel Pentium II - 300MHz
64MB RAM.
6.4GB HD (Needs upgrading, obviously).
13" Screen
Windows 98.

For now, it's my solitare box for study hall (yeah, teacher doesn't care, I've brought it in and played before), but eventually (sooner than later, I hope) I'll install Slack and use it for some form of pwngramming.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I'm amused by the fact that you think the hard drive is the most obsolete piece of equipment.

Technically, I am the oldest part, so CrAz3D is actually somewhat right. His suggestion, though, is denied. Sorry.

I didn't say the HD is the most obsolete part. I simply said it would be upgraded first. IIRC, iago runs Slackware on similar hardware for his workstation (his workstation is a laptop, again IIRC) with more RAM and a bigger HD. And I don't see you calling iago "stupid" or "cheap".

I got a new AIM screen name for the laptop, considering I don't want conflicting keys between machines (deadly7 e-killed me last time I let that happen). If I talk to you on a regular basis, leave me one within the next few days so I remember to add you: joetheodd1337.

I'll reiterate Sidoh's question. :)

The BIOS battery died, again. Luckily, I had a working one handy this time and I'm up and running again. Should be the last time it dies for years.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

You got a wireless card working in Linux? Or it's running Windows?

For the time being, it's in Windows. It met the minimum system requirements, but the processor is simply too slow, plus my network was screwed up anyhow. Like, broadband router behind dialup Windows box in the DMZ brand of screwed up.

I bought a new battery. Charging right now. Hopefully it'll hold a nice charge. :)

Thorougly dissapointed. It holds a better charge than the other one, but I'm rather annoyed that I paid $44 for something that holds a 45 minute max charge.

I should have guessed. :)

What I read was:

It's Windows, and here's a list of excuses of why I can't use Linux. The real reason being I'd never be able to live with myself!

I stand by what I've said before - TP 600 is a decent machine. Yes, it's time is close to over now, but I'm not about to get rid of it because I can afford a new one. I'll find some use for it, even if it's not my main laptop (I could even set it on a shelf somewhere, lid closed, under a stack of books, and use it as a HTTP server).
