I want a new processor to replace AMD sempron
« on: December 16, 2006, 12:44:33 pm »
Its for my sister's PC.  Her machine is really slow, why my parents got her a little AMD sempron is beyond me.

Anyhow, what would I need to look at to replace this?  Just another AMD processor maybe?
How hard would it be to replace it?

They usually don't have 32-bit processes for Socket 939, if not any. The socket is most likely either Socket A, or Socket 754. I'd guess Socket A, though.

Follow these steps to ID what type of socket your motherboard has:

1.) Download Everest: www.andymoir.com/downloads/everesthome220.exe

2.) Install it, and open the program.

3.) On the left hand menu, click "Motherboard".

4.)Select "CPUID"

5.) Beside "Platform ID" it should say "Socket ***"

Post what socket you have.  :)

I believe it is a socket 754. I want a new one too because it is for my laptop and my laptop is sooo slow.

Edit:

I found a processor I might want but I am unsure if it will work for my laptop.

I don't follow the logic of upgrading a sempron to a sempron...

There are athlon 64's that use socket 754 (that was the first socket they used), they just don't have integrated memory controllers.

What makes you so sure? Socket 754 Sempron processors might not be ripping fast, but they're really not that slow for even modern day gaming. Socket A, on the other hand, is a generation before Socket 754, meaning the processors are also a generation prior. I see absolutely no data in this thread that even points to it being Socket 754, so I don't know how you're drawing that conclusion.

I was not saying that's the only type of processor I was just saying that's the type that I have.

Ah, the way you said it was too ambiguous.

I was also saying that I wanted to get a new processor for my laptop but I was unsure on what type will be compatible for my laptop. It's an acer and the chipset is SiS 760GX Southbridge - LPC Bridge. Anyone have any recommendations?
