Dynamic DNS Updater
« on: December 21, 2006, 11:00:58 am »
Are you still in need of one that works? I would recommend www.afraid.org. They have several updaters that really work well.  :)

DynDNS works pretty well, but the client is cumbersome and difficult to configure.  I think iago was going to make a perl script and set it up with cron's to get around it.  Maybe I'mbwrong, though!

Yeah, I did, but it stopped working.

I want to go back to no-ip, but I need control of all my domains for it.  And getting in touch with Lobo is difficult..

Ah.  Can't you make them aliases of a no-ip domain?  I guess you'd still need Lobo's credentials for that; however, it'd save you the transfer fee!

Well, I'd just like to get control of the domain from him.  Then I don't have to worry about it expiring, and stuff.

A lot of routers have a built-in client, check there first.  If it doesn't, stop using a crappy router or find replacement firmware for it.

My internal (wireless) router has a built-in client, but it's useless.  My external router is one I rescued from a refuse bin, and doens't support anything, which is the way I want it.

If afraid is the same as no-ip or dyndns, then no thanks -- the only reason I'm not on no-ip is because I don't control my domain right now (as I said).  So afraid is as useless as no-ip, and dyndns's client sucks balls.

I don't understand what you mean by 'needing control of your domain' for no-ip, could you elaborate?

Why would you use no-ip at all?

I mean, I don't own the domain right now.  "whois x86labs.org"

Why would you use no-ip at all?
To keep my ip up-to-date.

So... at the risk of inciting another argument, this site is on a dynamic ip? lol?

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

My stepdad tripped the breaker while vacuuming, and I didn't notice for a little while.

Nothing to do with the IP.  :P

Yup.

Why not?
Because DNS caching would render it temporarily offline for many people every time the IP changes

The TTL on a no-ip or dyndns domain is 2 minutes.  That means that assuming I had the proper software running, there is <2-minutes gap every month or two.  The world will keep spinning.

You can set the TTL to whatever you want if you have your own DNS...

Yes, I know that, but your own DNS doesn't automatically update with your IP.  That's why it's easier to have a no-ip or dyndns address, those are designed to be dynamic.

You have the craziest excuses, and I don't think this is the first time it involved someone tripping (or possibly, tripping over) something. :P

You can set the TTL to whatever you want if you have your own DNS...

I think I can safely say "this is iago's website and he knows what he's doing".
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

You're right. Technically, Lobo owns the domain.
