Is the only reason you care about his death that you get to miss school?  You're sounding just a little selfish there..

No, I just don't think it's right for them to tell us to "mourn appropriately" but still make us go to school. I definitely care, in fact I'm going up to Washington tomorrow to see the casket.
I personally, believe that all of these days we have off for specific people (Presidents' Day, MLK Jr., Ford's mourning, Veteran's Day, etc) we should be in school.  I think all of those people most likely knew the value of education and would want us in school...maybe even just spending that day talking about why it is important and what not instead of goofing off somewhere.

I agree with Crazed.  Most people aren't "mourning" on these national holidays. And after all, how many days off should we have for mourning?  Why is 1 day sufficient or appropriate and not 2, or 3, or 40? And who is to decide who is and is not important enough to have a national holiday over?  In year 2400 should every day be a national holiday?

Obviously it's not an annual day. It's just a day to remember his death. And it's not feasible to shut down the government, essentially, for 30 days. That's why the flags will fly at half staff for that time period when a president dies.

Anyway, I just got back from DC. It was a pretty cold wait but it was worth it. The rotunda is beautiful and it was very neat getting to be in there. However, they kind of rushed you in and out (which makes since given the number of people.) I'm glad we got there early though (I was like 15th in line) because once daybreak hit, the line got really long. But I only waited for about 2 and a half hours.

You waited 2.5 hours, were 15th in line, and they rushed?  Something doesn't add up..

Probably a good amount of waiting before they actually openned the doors

Yeah the viewing started at 9. They rushed people I guess because the the line was very long at 9. We're lucky we were in the front.

I'll personally say I don't have much to mourn him for. Sure, it's a bummer some guy died, but I don't know much more of him beyond that, being born in Bush Sr's presidency.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I'm sure I'd mourn the death of Jesus Christ as my savior and all, but, eh, what's the use, I was born in year 1990, he died a long time ago.
