Rogue or Bard?
« on: February 20, 2007, 11:31:41 pm »
So in D&D, I want to take a thief/diplomat. One who can be sneaky and stuff, but when he gets caught (or has to get by the guards) he can BS his way out of it.

I'm thinking Rogue would be best, but a Bard has awesome social skills.

Opinions?

Bard is jack of all trades. You'll up your chance of getting caught but can weasel your way out better.

A good rogue would most likely go uncaught. ;)

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Rogue, mos def.  Halfling rogue == even better, because halflings get boosts to their Dex and get a side modifier of +1 (or is it +2) to AC, so you're better equipped to not get pwned in a fight.  My group's rogue has 5hp.. max.  :P

Elfs also got a + to dexterity.

And AC doesn't matter much if you don't get attacked, and that's my plan. :P

I'd go with an evil-aligned Bard, because evil Bards are cool. Rogues are OK. It all depends, really; if you wanna do more stabbing and silent killing you should go with Rogue but if you want to bluff your way out of anything, I'd go with a Bard.

I've thought long and hard, and here's my plan:

- Elven Rogue
- High dexterity (for rogue stuf)
- High charisma (for bullshitting)
- High intelligence (see the next point)
- Put my second level into Wizard, so I can cast "charm person" and use wands

Elves can multi-class to Wizard without special rules, and a level one wizard can cast "charm person" twice/day, which should be extremely helpful. Plus, I'll get a couple level 0 spells and the ability to use wands/magic items, which should be extremely helpful.

That's my plan so far! I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes.

Elves get a -2 to dexterity.. that's why mine has a 9 and a -1 modifier. :(

Must have changed from 3.0 to 3.5..

Elves having a low dexterity makes no sense. Elves are supposed to be graceful and agile. In 3.0 Elves have +2 dex, -2 con, but it makes no sense at all for elves to have a dex penalty.

And I confirmed, this is from 3.5:

Oh.  Hmm, I guess I rolled a 7 for my lowest trait.  I thought I had rolled 11's as my lowest. :\

Which do you prefer?

Keep in mine that I'm a bard with  high charisma and I use a bow (although the bow doesn't necessarily have to be included, since I use other stuff too).

I might even paint 2 of them, use one if I'm sneaking and the other if I'm not :)

Second one would make for an awesome ranger.

First one or third one. Third if sneaking, first if not. :P

Hmm, 2 was actually my favorite!

The main problem with 1 is that he's wearing chain-mail, which I'm definitely not going to do. But he does look pretty awesome.

I'm probably just going to paint them all (and 2 others that weren't in that picture) and use whichever one suits the situation best :)

I like the second, best. He's got a bow, looks bardish, and kind of charasmatic. I'm not sure how better to define a "charasmatic bard with a bow." :P.

By the way, can we look forward to online D&D anytime soon? I really liked T&T++.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

I'm still working on online T&T, a little at a time. I'm not rushing, so I don't get tired of it.

I don't like how the second has a beard, beards don't seem that charismatic to me.. :)

What else would it be??  Also, iago would have to make it so that we were all publicly squelched but could still talk to him.. just so that we actually get something DONE in a game.

From what I've read in the DM's guide/Player's Handbook, D&D isn't too complex at the start and you can pick it up very easily.

The idea behind D&D is talking with teammates. Dumdum. It's called +m to moderate.

I think that's what iago did wrong. He never +m'd the channel to keep us from talking.

Dude, we didn't even talk about stuff relevant to the game.  "NEWBY WHATS THAT NEW ALBUM YOU HAD?!" was one of the questions I asked you.  And then Hitmen started to talk about the advantages of throwing the Indian into the fray to attack the vampire or something. :x

Not to mention that at least 2 people were playing WoW and not answering my questions.

It's fine to talk about off-topic things in a real-world RPG, but it's way too hard/messy on IRC.
