70 long years
« on: March 20, 2007, 12:40:54 am »
70 years ago, on March 15, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, probably the greatest horror author of all time, passed away. He died of intestinal cancer, aggravated by malnutrition. He spent the last year of his life suffering, which could be thought of as an appropriate ending to the miserable life he lived. Dead at 47, one of the greatest authors dealt with parents' insanity, horrible deaths, and just all around depression. The mood and tone of his stories aren't the least bit surprising, he was a genius in a lot of pain.

If there's one grave I want to visit in my lifetime, it's 100% that one. If I ever have the opportunity to be in or around Rhode Island, I will absolutely visit it.

I don't understand his epiteph, from what I can tell it reads "I am providence." Do you understand it? Is it something from a book (story) of his?

It's a line from a letter he wrote. I don't know exactly what it means, but he was born and raised in Providence, he left for a few years when he got married, and then he returned there, and eventually died there. I'm guessing it has to do with that. :)

So poetic. :)

This should be in announcements.

RIP Lovecraft.
I'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

Probably not announcements, since it's 70 years and 5 days late, but General seems appropriate. *moved*

Oh, iago, I was actually thinking of reading The Call of Cthulhu (did I spell it right?). Not that it matters any, but I figured I'd tell you. :)

According to my dictionary, Providence means God.

Cthulhu is suppose to be a model that Blizzard used to make C'Thun. Just a little food for thought.

It's a good story. I suggest getting a "best of" collection, since Call of Cthulhu is only a couple dozen pages.

According to my dictionary, Providence means God.
It also means the capital of Rhode Island, where he was born and raised :P

More people will see it here. And it's not really about books, more about authors. :P

I'm close to providence too, but it's a shitty place to visit. Lovecraft is pretty badass though.
