That's why nobody listens to metal at my school! People like BigAznDaddy and such...

Quote
Mr Cadwallader then held an online discussion involving 19 members of the academy, 17 of whom were heavy metal fans. They spoke of listening to bands including System of a Down, Slipknot, Tool, Dragon Force, Forward Russia and In Flames when they were in a bad mood and using it to work off frustrations and anger.

YUCK.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

:) I agree. The idea behind the article is what counts! Err... I don't use metal to ward off anger/deal with social problems though :P

I mostly disagree with what this article says. I find a lot of smart people listen to metal, but I think their reasoning is way off, at least it doesn't fit with my experience.

Pfft, Tool is amazing. And this article is partially full of shit, because I don't know a single person that classifies Tool as heavy metal.

I posted it because of the idea that smart people listen to metal. The bands they classified as metal isn't :)

I didn't read the whole article, but it doesn't seem to consider that "metal" is currently a popular genre...

Would it be incorrect in saying that? I don't consider metal a current popular genre. Maybe in the 80's but not now.

I think it depends where you live, most people I know don't listen to it.

I also find that a lot of people listen to numetal/metalcore, but they tend not to be the smarter folk.

Haha, I went through gifted and talented programs until highschool, when I quit because they started making me do extra work. I'm don't think any of them were really metalheads, I only really know like 3 others and they're all brothers. But yeah, I don't listen to metal for some fucking gay emo reason like channeling my agression out. I like it because it's awesome. Very few other types of music have such an abundance of bands who actually treat their music as a composition rather than just a song. You also don't see the kind of technical prowess displayed in metal anywhere else. And yeah, I like classical music too. Paganini shreds.

I'd argue that progressive rock, jazz, and classical all have more technical prowess, as you put it, than any type of metal. Other than that though, metal is definitely ahead of the game.

Jazz is dumb. Anything labeled progressive usually sucks, no matter how good the players are.  On the other hand, classical is totally badass, and classical guitar is awesome. I have a friend who totally shreds who's starting to take classical guitar lessons and it's improving his overall playing significantly.

You said technical prowess, not if it sounds good. Jazz is basically right behind boy bands on my list of the fruitiest music ever, while it can be fun to play and improvise in moderation. If I play jazz for more than 5 minutes, I feel homosexual and that I should go to a gay bar.

As for progressive, Symphony X and Dream Theater are fucking amazing. It really depends on if the band can pull it off, though.

And classical, you don't have to tell my twice. I love transcribing Paganini to guitar, then throwing on some distortion for a neoclassical sound.

A friend of mine from computer class is a pretty smart guy and he's a big Metallica/Megadeth fan. Other than us two, and this one little lame kid (Zagaroth knows him -- Nick!) who only listens to it because we do, nobody else really likes metal.

EDIT -
And if I'd never picked up drumsticks or a guitar pick, I probably wouldn't give two shits about metal. I guess I really like it because I can respect how much practice it takes to get that good at your instruments, whereas rap is what.. four beats on a synthesyser, and some of this "punk rock" they've made lately sounds more like they're trying to break their instruments than play them. :P

In a thread like this, I don't think bigger-name bands or mainstream bands count. I know tons of people who are fans of Metallica or Megadeth, but that doesn't really mean anything.

I'd argue that progressive rock, jazz, and classical all have more technical prowess, as you put it, than any type of metal. Other than that though, metal is definitely ahead of the game.

What about Math Metal?

I love metal myself, and I'm not "smart" so to speak.  I think the whole article is just speculation, and random chance of the statistics for a greater number of "smart" people listen to metal.

Math metal is a more simplified version of progressive metal/rock.
