Valve's Steam service hacked, credit card information obtained

Posted Apr 19th 2007 1:20AM by Alexander Sliwinski

Valve's Steam content distribution system has apparently been hacked. The culprit allegedly got deep enough into the system to steal credit card information and financial information on Valve. DailyTech reports the hacker known as "MaddoxX" broke in and obtained:

* Screenshots of internal Valve web pages
* A portion of Valve's Cafe directory
* Error logs
* Credit card information of customers
* Financial information on Valve

MaddoxX posted the information he obtained on an anti-Steam website. He has also threatened to release a spreadsheet of the credit card information. We've contacted Valve for a statement on this alleged breach in security.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

I remember back when I was too poor to buy Steam, I used the version cracked by MaddoxX, and remember seeing him post a lot. IIRC, he's a gangster h4x0r. I can't seem to remember the forum, though... I remember giving him shit for stealing Maddox's name.

Haha, I remember that, Metal.  He'll get arrested for being stupid and we can all get on with our lives, because we all don't trust companies with our Credit Card information, right?

Update On The Site:

Doug Lombardi, director of marketing for Steam, tells 1UP, "There has been no security breach of Steam ... The alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Cafe program. This Cyber Cafe billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at Catch_A_Thief [at] ValveSoftware [dot] com."

I remember a Maddox or MaddoxX from Battle.net, it's probably the second one isn't it?

It's probably not either.  Maddox was pretty good with programming and such, but I'd still be skeptical to believe it's him.

Maddox and its derivatives are pretty common names...

Damn, it seems like a lot of old battle.net junkies are getting into some serious shit
This one is a conference on botnets and iNk`, mc0 and InTeL are discussed about 25 minutes into the conference.
