Mailing lists subscriber list used for spam?
« on: May 31, 2007, 03:16:41 pm »
I recently canceled all my mailing list subscriptions because I was never reading them, and they where starting to take up large amounts of space. After that, I noticed that almost all spam addressed directly to my email address disappeared. I only get about 1 every 2 weeks to that email address now, when previously I got 1-2 a day.

So, has anyone else noticed this happen to them? Perhaps the mailing list servers are compromised?

EDIT:
They where open source projects, like Debian, Horde IMP, and exim. Not commercial lists.

I've noticed spam after *posting* on mailing lists, but I just imagined that that was caused by people gleaning my name.

I haven't gotten spam from lists I haven't posted to, though. However, most of the lists I subscribe to are on SecurityFocus, and if I got spammed by them I could walk over to the moderator's desk and whack him upside the head. :D
