Maybe not in impersonal settings like WoW, but with small(er) groups of known people, it can work out surprisingly well given a good DM or two and good players.

We lacked the good players part. Hell, one of them (*cough* blaze you sonofabitch) was playing WoW in the background.

And halfway through my computer (the IRC server) caught a fire in the power supply...

He's talking about WoW RPGs (moreso others, in fact), not about the attempt we made at playing on IRC. If that can even be called an attempt :P

We should try again--now that more people have actually roleplayed. >>

WoW RP is better than it sounds. Especially when you read all of the Lore. You can craft pretty nice stories as a basis for your RP.

Guild does it and I've tagged along sometimes, so what, wanna fight about it?
One must ask oneself: "do I will trolling to become a universal law?" And then when one realizes "yes, I do will it to be such," one feels completely justified.

Roleplaying online doesn't even come close to matching real life roleplaying.

Yes it does.  I had this debate with a guy at work the other night :P

How the hell did your computer catch fire again?

Also, I haven't played WoW in over a month.  I'd be up for RP anytime after next week.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

That's because my computer caught on fire. And I got grounded the next day for being drunkerly.
That was a fun night :). The next day... not so much

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.
