Title: Debunking an Herban Legend
Post by: Ender on April 10, 2008, 09:38:00 pm
My friend recently told me that soy milk has estrogen in it, implying that I should be weary. When I looked online I saw there were myths of soy milk having a feminizing effect. And I wondered: is this the story of how iago turned female? And then I worried.

But alas, it's the very opposite. Soy milk has phytoestrogens, which in fact decrease one's estrogen level. Studies show that soy milk may also decrease the risk of certain cancers (but then again, [tex]\forall[/tex] food [tex]\in[/tex] world [tex]\exists[/tex] study s.t. study links cancer).

It's funny though how there's this one camp of people trying to show how soy bean prevents cancer and this other camp of people trying to show how soy bean causes cancer. And then there's my conspiracy theory that corporations hire scientists to do this very research :P

There are other chimerical claims about soy milk out there, but they're mostly stupid so I won't go into any more of those.

edit: forgot a credible article I based some of this off of -- http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20010324/food.asp

I'd read this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soy_controversy#Soy_controversy

Probably has the best description.
