Title: Anyone want to work on a Java project together?
Post by: dynobird on October 16, 2005, 03:40:40 pm
I was thinking an Instant Messenging Program or an Email program.

E-mail program in Java has been done.

The IM client/server hasn't though...

dMSN is a Java client capable of connection to ICQ, AIM, and MSN

No we're not talking about clients alone. We're talking about creating both the client and the server.
So, Instant Messenging program, Java, who wants in?
It would be a nice case of team development, something that is very important in many programming jobs.

Can you think of any unique features it would have? I don't think you can.

It will be able to double your harddrive capacity.

The server AND client would be available, free, open-source, and you could run them on any platform that supports Java.

Yeah, let's see any client and server that offers that.

Ok, so decentralized may be new, but not really the best idea. At least it's an idea; you have one thing over the competition. Now think of more things, or it'll generate less than 0 interest.

Linking the servers.

Linking the servers.

So, you're going to give people their free software to run on their servers, and somehow get them to link servers, then get other people to connect to yours? I don't see that working out at all.

It's actually quite possible.  I can see it happening assuming the server software is easy to install and maintain.  It would also have to be pretty lightweight.

If you have a friend that runs the server, he probably has a few friends that run it, and so on and so forth.  If you could get the ball rolling, so to speak, you could pretty easily make it an interconnected network.

I still see a missing gap with no centralized existance because there is going to be a disadvantage to people who have dynamic IP addresses that run servers, but it really shouldn't be to difficult to update... kind of like the DNS system... the server would have to update the other servers should it change an IP address and it would propagate throughout the system.

If I knew Java, I'd love to join this effort, but alas I do not.  If you get it rolling and decide to publicly release it, I'd love to work on a website for it.  :)

I think you guys should do it, it sounds like a neat idea!

We could include a part of the program that would tell no-ip.org to update an account.  Bam.  Dynamic IP's no longer a problem.  I'm beginning to like this.

Hehe, I think it would be a fun project.  The no-ip system kind of acts as a centralized network, which they're trying to avoid.  However, it doesn't play hardly any role in the system, so I don't see it being an issue.

Anyway, you guys shoudl do it! ^_^

Think of it like IRC networks... that's the best I can think of.

Except we can add circle links, whereas IRC can't. ;)

Do me a favor: stop putting people down because you can't think up anything original.

I never said it was going to succeed.

All I said is that it had some great concept ideas.

That's how it seemed to me, where you could run the server for yourself, or 'linked' (accepting unknown connections), like IRC. However, such a system would begin to become rather complicated, and supremely hard for the end user to establish. I just don't see the idea catching on with a ton of people. It's a very small niche market.

Do me a favor: stop putting people down because you can't think up anything original.

This was totally uncalled-for. Insulting me personally because of my creativity issues is not really the topic at hand here, I was just trying to give you real-world insite into the future of your wild hair. That, and trying to encourage you to come up with more ideas, since one new feature isn't something to base an entire [complicated] project from, especially in an old, dead subject as IM clients/servers.

Ok, lets do it!
I'm in, anyone else?

If you're saying that because you think we will have problems in organizing it...
well we could [democratically] elect a leader who is knowledgeable and good at OOP design.
He could assign us individually (or in pairs, if we have a lot of people) to creating certain components of the program.
This is just an idea, I'm not trying to take the lead, and I don't even want the lead (because I'm probably nowhere near the most knowledgeable here). Which isn't to say that I'm not capable of working on this project as a member; I've become well-read on Java and OOP =p
