Hey my name is Lexi. I'm 14, and I'm a newbie. I'm from Oshkosh, WI and dorkz rawk. My friend gave me the whereabouts to dis sight. ::) i am a gothy gurl and i love metal/ hard rock, some country, and techno. I hate rap. See, the thing is, it's just painful to read stuff like that on a forum. In an IM I can understand, you (nor even I) take the time to type out a message and proof-read it before sending it. On a forum, however, it's generally expected that you take the time to type everything out nice and proper.

You have just as little (in my mind, less) right to conclude this as the people before have to criticize your spelling. If you haven't noticed, the only people who use that sort of grammar on these boards are people who are new. We're not "picking on you," it's just something that generally annoys most of us. I don't see any reason behind using this common excuse "It's the internet!" Who cares?! It's another medium for communication. I don't understand purposeful lack of grammatical flow in communication just because data is transmitted digitally instead of across paper or pressure waves.

You can call it as "little" as you want, but it's a subjective statement. In a community where opinions are based entirely on the content of a post (such as an online forum), grammar can play a crucial role in your judgement.
We're not saying you're stupid or intellectually challenged, we're saying that you should use the grammar that we know you're capable of.

Generally it's not meant as an insult. People become very snide when correcting other people's forum etiquette though. As rabbit pointed out, it hurts to read a lot of that junk - your mind needs to go through extra hoops to process the additional information such as sounds (see this (http://semantics-online.org/blog/2003/09/aoccdrnig_to_rscheearch.php) for example).

Don't get me started how every goth is an individual with true feelings and how nobody else really does or understands what it's like. Most of us have already been in high school. :P (That's why we're cynical about goths.... In my four years at a major metropolitan university where 60,000 students are enrolled on the main campus alone, I think I've maybe ever seen one "goth". Everyone grows out of it).

I forgot to mention. I'm horrible at spelling, myself. That's the one thing I miss about FireFox -- GoogleToolbar and it's awesome spell checker... Opera has a spell checker, but it's about a tenth as efficient.
That's aside from the point, though. I don't mind poor spelling as much as I do poor grammar (to an extent, of course). As demonstrated above, MyndFyre knew exactly what word I was referring to. :P

Usually people who don't type with correct grammar on the internet come from communities which don't discuss issues that require a lot of intelligence, so they obviously don't have as much experience in debating issues such as these, and the majority of the time suck at debating. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen somebody with horrible grammar on the internet actually debate well. So, in this case it's actually a pretty valid stereotype.

Incidentally, a note to the person who original started this therad: this is an intellectual community (besides Joe.. just kidding). We have standards on how we want people to talk and behave. In a way, that's arrogant, but that's the way we like it. That's how we've built the community. If people don't like it, they don't have to stay. It's really up to the individual whether or not they want to be here.
And by the way, there are people who are grown up (20's and 30's) who are goths, in some way. I have some friends (well, a friend, and her friends) who go to a nightclub around here (the Cage, maybe?) where everybody dresses as goths. They don't do it every day, it's more for special occasions, but it still happens.

Even Einstein -- he tried to implement a Cosmilogical Constant in his formulae for General Relativity, but later concluded it was a wrong turn and should be disregarded. (Some Physics Theorists actually predict the Cosmological Constant is still plausible, but extremely minute in impact on the end outcome).
This aside, I think it's foolsh to call c0n an unintelligent, useless moron just because he doesn't use grammatical flow. I stand by my original claim: I believe he's quite intelligent.

Intelligence is mental capacity, despite whatever you understand it to be. Since I'm sure you'll agree that Computer Science is a relatively difficult subject, I hope you will undrestand my claim of his intelligence.

Goth is lifestyle, not a religion. I've often heard Satan Worshipers refered to as Gothics, but I'm not entirely sure if that's correct.
Goth is similar to Emo in relational definition.

Intelligence is a powerful constituent of success in debate. If you don't have the intellectual capacity to understand the subject matters relating to the argument, you'd have a rather hard time being successful in a debate.

While it seemed to me that Teh User did better (mostly because Teh User is extremely intelligent/learned, I'd say), he still had valid points and he definitely didn't "suck" at argument.

I'd estimate that at LEAST 90% of the population (just a guess) is intelligent under Sidoh's definition, and has the potential to learn how to debate.

Um... I'm not "wierd." Well, I am, but not like freaky. I'm an individual, and I just happen to think differently than other people. Joe, I love you, and you are just as wierd as I am. But everybody's different. I don't make fun of people that often. Not all goths are fucked up... I'm actually a load of fun. I'm outgoing and very caring, I consider other people's feelings. I want to be a Marine Biologist... or maybe a Drug/ Alchohal Counsoler. I'm not too sure... I want to be succesful. I get really good grades (A's and B's). And I didn't intend on "bragging" about being gothic... I just wanted to get the point out that I am. I'm not too big on preps or wiggers... they apsolutely annoy the fuck out of me.
