What is a simple way to host an mp3 file for listening but hiding the filepath/disable downloading for the listener? I need to share a beat with a rapper but don't want him to be able to download it.

Uploading it to a music myspace is the quickest way I know.
-
tell the rapper to make his own beats, and not used canned ones. dayamn.

If you stream it, he can download it. That is if he knows how :P

Make a flash movie and just add the song as background music. Pretty simple and takes some work to extract the audio.
-
If I can see it or hear it, I can copy it. Remember that.

At a quality good enough that it could be recorded over? For commercial release?
-
If you need to protect it, you should put watermarks (or voiceovers, in this case) in it, and just send him the MP3.
-
If you wrote and recorded the music, you can also register it before you send it. You will own the copyright and will be in position to sue anybody's ass.
And it's not expensive at all, just paperwork.

So what's the story? OG Trust is making beats now?
-
You own the copyright either way, actually, you just need to register before you're allowed to sue.

I believe you have to make a reasonable attempt to indicate that it's your intention to own the rights to it, too.

Sure. At whatever quality you send him, would be my best bet.
Put some watermark/voiceovers, like Camel said, or give him some 64kbps MP3 that's unusable for actual production.

It's a friends beat, but I've been in contact with the rapper regarding other business. I'm trying to avoid sending the MP3 or my friends myspace to him, since I want the sale to go through my company.

Yeah basically. My friend makes some good beats, this one beat I've liked since freshman year..I play it for everybody. My friend is more into just making music he doesn't care about the business aspect of it so somebody else has to.
But this is just something I'm doing because I'm passionate about this particular beat, it's not like a full time thing. But I need this artist for something else so I'm trying to solidify that relationship.

True..it's not required. I want to hear it made into a song though, regardless of if I get paid. I'd rather get paid though. :)
