Title: Downtime
Post by: iago on June 24, 2007, 02:46:43 am
Sorry about that. To make a long story short, here's our fence:

Will post more later.

So the hooker drove her Ford through your fence... and then tripped the ethernet cable?

Dude, after things like this you have to ask yourself -- was the sex worth the trouble?

Your equation doesn't add up! Did you miss the tree? Check your steps. :P

2 days ago, we got pwned by a tree. Last night, we had a power failure due to yet another severe thunderstorm (third one in the three days I've been home...)

I'm just having really bad luck with my computer ever since I've been home...

There's also been a tornado in this province every day since I've been home. Usually several. Hmm...

This time was different.  The main page (:80) redirected to some sort of login for a router.

Maybe his IP changed and his connection or the update client wasn't functioning?

DynDNS's updating client has never worked for me, ever. I'm going to change to no-ip one of these days, or something...

And the reason for the router's page was probably that somebody else picked up my IP who has remote administration for his router enabled. Coincidence.

That's what I was getting at. :)

Yeah, no-ip has worked perfectly for me.

Try $90. I would have to upgrade to a "business" package, which also has the side effect of restricting my monthly bandwidth.

How much bandwidth does this site serve out on average anyways?

lame, my ISP offers it without the 'business' upgrade

Hmm, same here.  I've had it for the last few months.  I think it's $5/month more.

I'm already restricted to 200MB per day anyhow. :P

iago, Google for inadyn. It's a bit of a pain to set up, but once you do that, just run it in a screen and it'll check your external IP every ~10 minutes (configurable) and update if needed.

Isn't that what all update clients for dynamic ip services are supposed to do? :P

I've never checked, but likely not much for the site. I'm more worried about my family's usage.

Running it in a screen is eww. Doesn't it have daemon mode? Plus, the name sounds way too much like "Initech", and that's not cool. And if you don't know what "Initech" is, you don't watch enough movies.

Some day, I'll bring my server to Calgary. It's just a matter of driving from Winnipeg to Calgary, since I can't really take it on a plane with me and I wouldn't want to check it (or ship it).

Are you sure it was the same client?  They have a couple different ones written by members.  All of the ones for Linux (that I've tried anyway) suck nuts.  They were a bit cumbersome to configure and the documentation on them wasn't very good either.

I forget the name offhand, but I think it was ddclient. It works. Easy to configure. What more do you want? :P

I'm pretty sure I tried ddclient, it was easy to configure and everything but never worked. It obviously sucks.

Haha, I saw that storm as I was driving through Canada. I actually have a picture of it building up in Saskatewan. I'll post it when I find the camera.
