Seeing all those AP courses listed makes me cry.
Apparently, my school used to offer more advanced courses, but they were forced to cut them in order to make room for things like Basic Geometry, Basic Math, Basic English, General Earth Science, and General Physical Science. All that's left in the way of advanced courses at my school is AP Calculus, AP Government, and Concurrent English, which is no where near enough to satisfy my thirst for learning. I just cannot understand why my high school feels they must accommodate people who could not pass the eighth grade by creating easier courses for them. If they are not ready for high school, keep them in middle school.
Seriously, Wyoming's standardized test scores were lagging behind, so we have Basic Math and Basic English (the equivalent of eigth grade math and English) to remedy that. Apparently, holding children back in middle school would be a much more difficult solution. It's easier to force high school teachers, who could better spend their time teaching advanced courses, to deal with the children who were unable to trudge through middle school with passing grades.
It's a pity to see a school district bow down to the demands of parents who think their children are ready for high school when they are unable to pass middle school.
Anyways, that's my rant; I, however, don't know what classes I'll be taking next year in college. Probably lots of math, science, and engineering courses. :D
-
We have a rather wide array of AP courses. However, AP Enviromental Science wasn't a course (no teacher) the last few years but they found one I guess. And AP Comparative Politics we're only having because my friend and I lobbied for it.

Intelligence is the direct cause of almost everything else. Intelligence determines the quality of your decisions. Because of this, intelligence = success, if used correctly.
This, of course, also asumes "luck" (if you believe in such things) and common sense are entailed in intelligence, which I think they are. Not luck, but I don't believe in luck. :P
you also have to work out like me ;D
max bench 240

Pfff. Fuck that. I can bench 135.
I have little use for physical strength beyond what I already have.
/me flexes.
but yeah you have to meet/ have a social life with other people
To what? To succeed? I suppose that depends on how you define success.
In case you're unaware, intelligent people are quite capable of sustaining social lives. :P

No you need to STFU!
The reason I take CP is for a reason. I have stuff that needs to be done when I get home from school like take care of my mom for one who is/has been very sick for almost my whole life. My father died when I was 13 so I have no help on that part. I could very well take AP classes and have 3 hours of Homework everynight but I dont want to waste my time doing AP classes and risk not spending time with my mom. I dont plan on getting into Yale/Harvard so what is the point anyway? I recently just got my progress report and I have B's in all my classes besides Geometery (I hate math) and I have a A+ in Graphic Design. Damn I could teach that class If I wanted too. So please do us all a favor and rid of your stupidity and take Topaz with you.

Heh, that seems like overkill. In my opinion there wasn't much more to cover in BC (although I'm not *positive* what the differences are). If you took AB, got a 5, and then spent 6-7 months just on the BC portion, that would be the easiest class ever -- I'm not being cocky, it's true -- it would be like spreading a month's worth of material across 7 months...
At my school, they ordered 1 extra BC exam and shorted on 1 AB exam. A friend of mine (who was in AB) was the last of his class to enter the testing room, so he had to sit down and write the BC exam impromptu -- lol. He was fairly smart, (e.g. got 1510/1600 on the SAT I, 750/800/800/800 on SAT II), so I'm curious what his AB/BC scores turned out to be. It's possible he got a 5 on the BC exam without learning any of the material, heh.

When I'm a junior I'm just taking calculus 1 & 2 at the UofM. Fuck AP.
-
When I'm a junior I'm just taking calculus 1 & 2 at the UofM. Fuck AP.
I had a talk with my chem teacher about kids taking classes at universities instead of taking the AP classes.
I've come to the conclusion from what he said that it's not worth it unless you have no other options. :)
-
Last time I talked to you, you were going to be taking Calculus III as a Junior. :\
-
I wouldn't think taking introductory calculus at college is any better than taking AP. Actually, you'll probably learn more if you do AP Calc BC. The course doesn't make the artificial disconnection between integral and differential calculus that most colleges do, and it's geared towards 'elite' students, unlike Calc I & II. The only way it would be better at college is if the professor were far better than the teacher. Having been the TA for Calc I, II, and IV, I can say that the AP approach to calculus is superior.
On the other hand, AP Chemistry is severely lacking in certain areas like organic chemistry. You'd be far better prepared for university if you managed to do IB Higher Level Chem or possibly took 1st year chem at college. If you just want to go to an elite university though, AP Chem will suffice =).
-
Advantages of AP over taking it at the University:
- cheaper per credit hour, much cheaper
- since its an advanced class, there are less dumbasses in the class
- the teachers are more motivated and usually better because of the lack of dumbasses (usually)
- smaller class sizes and better chance of having an english speaking instructor
- its not an f'n weedout class
- no bitch labs (ie the weedout classes always get the worst possible lab/recitation times)
- doesn't affect your gpa if you do poorly for some odd reason
- being ahead in your prereqs helps a ton with scheduling (you aren't competing with everyone else in your class to get into the same full classes)
Disadvantages:
- grading scale is usually tougher
- no curve (at least at my hs)
- annoying AP test
Definately a pros outweighing the cons imo
-
My roommate last year took Calc BC in high school and got a 5 on the AP test, then came here and got a C in Calc 1.
-
My roommate last year took Calc BC in high school and got a 5 on the AP test, then came here and got a C in Calc 1.
For what reason? Because the material was too challenging? Unless the teacher strongly disliked him or something like that, I'd wager it's because he's lazy.
-
Sidoh's probably right, but it could also be a language barrier problem. The foreign student TA's often get the weedout classes.
-

Summer in between Junior-Senior year. Close enough, though.

I don't have to pay. My state pays for me to go to college.

As far as I know, Calculus isn't required unless you're in a math-related major/minor (physics, engineering, math)
- doesn't affect your gpa if you do poorly for some odd reason
Does too, at my school. Sure it's weighted 1.3 but if you truly fuck up it'll still mess your GPA up.. pretty badly.
I didn't really care about your other bullet points.
-
Summer in between Junior-Senior year. Close enough, though.
I'm pretty sure you said during your Junior year. You're falling behind, Indian. :P
I truely hope you do care about this point:
the teachers are more motivated and usually better because of the lack of dumbasses (usually)
Having a motivated teacher makes a tremendous difference.
Also, seeing as Rule is easily the most mathematically advanced person on these boards, I find it funny that you challenge his advice when you haven't even started Calculus I.

Regardless of gpa? I'm pretty sure they don't give free rides to everyone just because you are a minority. It does annoy the hell out of me though that caucasian males get the freakin shaft when it comes to government grants (discrimination!).

Lies. I said summer.

I don't depend on teachers to spoon feed me everything. I haven't yet, and I doubt I'll start.
Also, seeing as Rule is easily the most mathematically advanced person on these boards, I find it funny that you challenge his advice when you haven't even started Calculus I.
Your point being? His experiences won't always (if ever) agree with mine.

In order to apply for the Post Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) you have to have a ~C average I think. Currently I'm at a 12.6/13.0 (with 13.0 being the A+ marker.. our system is weird), I think I'll be fine.. I'm not by any means getting a "free ride" for college. The state pays for me (if I get accepted to the college and by my school[which has to OK it]) for Junior/Senior year (assuming I make it both years).
whats your point?
So there will be a lot less of these idiots as opposed to my Algebra 2 class I just had.

If these people really are that dumb, or are taking the Algebra class because it will be a college prereq why in the world would they be in an AP Calc class? Especially if these people really are the people you suggest will not need Calc for their supposed college degrees.

Because we have to take Algebra 2 to graduate from High School. And then they listen to the counselors who tell them to take math all 4 years and finish AP calc. Our counselors are idiots.
-
http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/upload/viewitem.php?id=179
I'm pretty sure MCC 160 is the equivilant of Calculus II. The academic advisor said that I'd placed out of Calculus I (MC 141 I believe), so that's what I'm basing that off of. :)
-

Well, the counselors are only telling students to take it in the best interest of the student. Many colleges look to see if you were willing to continue to learn or just slack off during your senior year.
-

I went to see my counselor one day about scheduling something for next year (something I completely forgot about, but that's irrelevant). I've already posted my registered classes for next year so I won't do it again. Basically my counselor spent twenty minutes telling me why my schedule is wrong, blah blah blah, how I shouldn't work so hard, blah blah blah, I'm going to burn out. I replied with one simple phrase "I know what I'm doing." and it shut her up.
-
*shrugs*
My boss was valedictorian and took some pretty difficult courses in high school. He said he'd never do it that way again. :\

Now that is BS. Our old counselor did that. Students would ask how hard a class was, and if it was hard, he would advise them against taking it. It pisses me off to hear how counselors are almost discouraging learning.

My counselor put me in college prep Spanish/math this year. That fucking bitch. I hated those motherfucking classes.
Anyway, this year I told her I'm doing all AP and she didn't say a word. Bitch.
And they encourage you to take easier classes because it'll be easier for you to get an A which means teachers get paid more! :D

Who cares what the grade is if the students aren't learning anything? The point of the education system is for students to learn, and grades are supposed to be an accurate measure of that. However, grades don't mean much anymore, at least that was the case in my high school. There were students who maintained an A in AP Calculus because of the way the teacher graded. People could miss all but one or two questions on multiple choice tests and still receive a 79% on them. Then, the students could do test corrections to get 2/3 of the points they missed back; he told us the answers to the tests.
Basically, if you enrolled in AP Calculus, you were guaranteed an A. You weren't, however, guaranteed any knowledge from the class.
