Title: Howdy
Post by: Chavo on December 05, 2005, 05:23:32 pm
Newby/iago, I must say you have come up with an intereseting introduction format :)

I'm unTactical, aka daryll, aka criz8426.  My real name is Chris. I am 21 and I'll give you a cookie if you can figure out what day of the month I was born on.

I'm from the exciting land known as Kansas where I go to school and work (I work for the university doing tech support)

I'm a big fan of Revis, Green Day, Seether, Crossfade, Metallica, and Copus (if any of you have ever heard of Copus, I'll give you a whole plate full of cookies).  That said, I'll listen to pretty much anything except "depressive" country type music (upbeat country is fine).

I have a girlfriend of just over 3 years and a damn good one if I do say so myself.

I'm a co-chieftan of clan tactical on azeroth (wc3 dota clan, channel clan hiim).  There is a long and semi-interesting story about hiim for anyone that cares  ;)  Most of us are pretty good friends and we focus more on having fun than anything else.

The only person from x86 that I know previously is deadly7, although I have had the pleasure of seeing other members' works.

I'd like to get to know x86 because they seem like a bunch of froods that really know where their respective towels are at.

Rules? what rules?  /ducks (yes, I read them)

I don't watch too terribly much tv apart from Football, but I am a big fan of That 70's Show

Favorite movie is by far Boondock Saints (where are you sequel!?!)

Favorite country is UK because I love the freakin accent, continent: er.....australia....they have kangaroos! season is definately winter, can't get enough snow.

My major is computer engineering with a minor in computer science (I would double major if it wouldnt require me to take ~80 more credit hours).  My favorite class thus far (I'm a junior) was Microcontroller assembly (we worked with Motorolla chips, fun stuff).

Favorite chemical: (http://www.at-bristol.org.uk/alcoholandyou/Facts/images/ethanol.gif)

Favorite food is my grandma's applie pie....mmmm mmmm good, Pepsi is my favorite soda but my favorite drink is up in the air right now as I try to decide which beer I like best  ;D

Douglas Adams is just a genious of an author so he wins hands down, I'll take away your cookies if you can't guess which of his books I like best.

I currently dual boot my primary computer to winxp and archlinux, mainly because I'm still learning linux and wanted a distro that I could actually learn the OS with and not just how to use it (I previously had FC4 installed).  On my server I run win2003 and plan on installing debian.

I prefer to build my own computer so I don't really have a favorite brand. I absolutely deplore most HP/Compaq's though.

I play frisbee football and football on a regular basis and would play soccer if not for a lack of interest amongst my friends.

I'm a big strategy game buff.  Warcraft 3 (dota), civilization series, heroes of might and magic series  have been my favorite computer games, I'll play any card game, any time.  Especially pitch, spades, or Up and Down the river (insanely fun party game).  I have enjoyed the Settlers of Catan board game as well as Tom Clancy's Politika.  I'll play just about anything though.

I'm really not an animal person. I don't dislike them persay, I just don't enjoy their company most of the time (that and they all smell).

My interests are primarily living the college life (aka party), programming, random hardware "hacking" (see hackaday.com), and my girlfriend.  I know Java and C# pretty well, I think I've forgotten most of what C++ I knew simply because I haven't used it in almost 4 years, but I'd probably pick it up quickly.  I know asp.net, php, css, html, sql, and vb as well.

with that I tip my hat, all this typing has made me thirsty

Agreed. He's one of the few who aren't members that did an introduction I enjoyed reading (and didn't have to squint my eyes at the horrible mis-spelling and/or fall asleep reading the 4 lines the author took to type out).

Welcome. I'm sure you'll fit right in. :)

Eww @ computer engineering, but yay  @ Microcontroller assembly.  I've been doing a lot of work with Atmel chips, and I love it.  I have trouble respecting Computer Engineers, though, I've heard WAY too many stories about them from Computer Scientists who have to show Computer Engineers how to program :)

I hear ya, my curriculum only requires that I take CIS 200 (basically intro to java), CIS209 (a C lab, not even a class) and CIS 510 (OS architecture with very little actual programming).  The EECE431 (Microcontrollers) teacher is pretty cool though, he pretty much requires you to be a decent programmer to pass his class.  Double majoring isn't really an option when I can get a masters for about the same amount of work, so I'll probably stick with the minor.

Glad to see a lot of Boondock fans

My best guess is ethanol. (2 C's = eth; 5 H's + 1 OH = anol)

@gamesnake: alcohol really isn't all that fun with fire, sure it burns fast, but its not explosive or easily converted to a combustible powder.

Drunken DotA is rarely planned, usually happens when some of us find ourselves half-drunk and with nothing better to do at 4 in the morning :P

However, the 2nd planned Drunken DotA LAN party will be somwhere in the 12/20 - 12/23 range.  We will probably try to get a bunch to remote in.

@Warrior: I love you too, but only on thursdays.

Actually, I go to KSU in Manhattan.  I have a lot of friends in Lawrence that go to KU though.  KU really isn't that great of a school to go to if you are looking for engineering whereas KSU has a nationally ranked engineering program.

I remember playing Goldeneye while pretty drunk, against some sober friends.  Sober, I was pro at the game, but they weren't.  Even drunk, I was still kicking ass.  The only difference was, I wasn't really focussing, and I had no clue what I was doing, but they still got hosed.  Hooray for instinct!

UMR was actually my first pick, but they jacked tuition at the last minute and I decided to go to my second pick.  CS falls under Engineering at KSU and I don't know how well it is ranked, but its a pretty good program.  I know Illinois has a damn fine CS program though, have you looked at them?

@Blaze: well, I have been known to be a very active drunk :)

No, I haven't looked at Illonis.  I don't know if my parents want me to go that far out-of-state.  I live in Kansas City Missouri and so KU is out of state for me too.  But, it's closer than MU and UMR.  Also, I have a bunch of family in Kansas that may allow me to use their address.  That way I don't have to pay out of state tuition.. But, we'll see.

If you can't get instate, look into the MidWest Student Exchange, it allows a certain number of students from each state to get reduced (usually 1.5 instate) tuition rather than paying full out of state tuition.  I definately incourage you to look at KSU's CS program though, I think you'll like it a lot better than KU's which is in my opinion one of the worst ones in the state.  Manhattan is about 2 hours from the Missouri side of KC, so its not too bad.

Okay, I will look into that.  But, why do you think KU has one of the worse CS program?

Well, for starters, Computer Science does not even have their own department (a rareity for good reason).  Instead they are bundled with the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering program.  This is not good, Electrical Engineering has virtually nothing to do with Computer Science and the fact that you have some professors teaching both EE and CS courses really says a lot about how their CS classes are orriented.  The KU CS  budget is obscenely lower and they have a reputation for not challenging their students.  At KU, CS is one of those departments that has simply been lost in the crowd.  The one good thing I can say about it is they do probably have a higher ratio of instructors with English as their primary language.  I could rant all day about the things I don't like about KU, but I'll just leave you with this interesting fact:  The entire Network infrastructure is run by students (who don't know what they are doing).  This backfired on them horribly a year or so ago when their entire (ENTIRE) network crashed because of a virus on one dorm students machine (they have basically no security measures in place, their managed AV is a joke).  It took them 8 hours to isolate the problem, 2 days to restore partial internet access in select areas, and 13 days to completely fix everything.  The worst part was that this was during dead week/ finals week so tons of students were hit pretty hard.

@ZeroX: what do you have against Green Day?

I disagree with the idea that you have to like only a certain type of music.  I enjoy any and all music that shows talent, so lots of talent is usually what makes a band one of my favorites.  I can listen to Enya, Randy Travis, and Disturbed in the same sitting and enjoy them all.  :P

Yeah, my taste in music is pretty wide-spread, all things considered.  Like you, I'll listen to things like Exodus, Slayer, Disturbed, Dry Kill Logic, etc and really enjoy them.  Right after that, I might listen to Brian Tyler (orchestral -- Children of Dune soundtrack) or something like that.  I've been listening to The Postal Service recently (indietronic).

Alright, thanks for the information.  I appreciate it. ;)

By the way, Computer Engineers tend to suck (A LOT) at programming.  So if both departments are combined, I highly recommend avoiding it.

When I looked at schools, if EECE and CS were not seperate departments I didn't even bother going for a tour.  Furthermore, CompE had to have a different curriculum than EE to convince me that CompE wasn't just an afterthought.  By the way, not all CompE majors suck at programming ;)

A lot of them do, though. :)

I think he's implying comp engineers have a hard time getting jobs and we need more teachers, or summat.

There will probably be ~10-12 of us in a LAN starting around 10pm (CST).  Then who knows how many others will be joining us online.  Since I'm not sure if we have enough cd keys, we will probably have one game via LAN and another game (or two if we have more than 20 people!) on battle.net.

channel is clan hiim on azeroth, I will probably turn off greetings and set an informative idle message for anyone that is there (assuming I don't have to log the bot(s) for the key. Come at any time, we will probably play until 7 or 8 am (CST). This is a warcraft 3: tft (custom map DotA) for those of you that don't already know :)  All are welcome, preferably drinking! I will also have a ventrilo server up for those who aren't at the LAN.

Keep in mind that this is DotA, not ladder warcraft so there will be plenty of people that suck hardcore :P

Those of us that are pretty good at it will be trying to eliminate the advantage through intoxication as well  ;D

nah, we were playing on the lan side and the other 4-5 that weren't in the lan game decided to just watch rather than play online with other people (we had a larger lan turnout than expected).

I'd like to get to know x86 because they seem like a bunch of froods that really know where their respective towels are at.

:)
DOTA is whored now as well.
I remember when I first played DOTA... a while back. It has really changed!

Aye, it is one of the few custom maps/mods that has been refined to the point where the balance/strategy/etc is that of a standalone commercial game.

Feel free to stop by on Azeroth if you want to play :)
