Title: Dice-inking tip
Post by: Sidoh on December 26, 2006, 03:47:00 am
I'm not sure how famous of a trick this is, but I sure didn't know it before a few days ago.  If you ever need to re-ink your dice, consider doing them with crayon.  You grind the wax into the grooves and wipe the excess out.  It works fantastically!

I typically just buy new dice when they get worn out.  Not that mine ever have.  But I know that some people have odd connections with their dice, and for them that's cool advice :)

My old boss had a few dice that he waxed 20 years ago and you could still see the numbers pretty well. :)

I don't think I'd keep dice for 20 years.  When mine start wearing thin, I'm going to go drop another $10 for a cube of 36.

I guess I'm not a real gamer in all respects -- I don't feel any kind of special bond with my dice :P

He has a giant case of dice.  He has 20-30 of each type.

I just said that to demonstrate how well the technique worked. ;)

I have friends who have dice of every conceivable size and shape.  Personally, I have:
36 x d6 (probably more like ~30 now, they tend to get lost)
2 x d10
1 x d4
1 x d8
1 x d12
1 x d20

The d6's came in a pack, as did all the rest.  Obviously I'm not a D&D player, I'd probably get a couple more of each if I was.

But either way, I don't collect dice, and I don't really care about my dice.  If they get to the point where they need to be re-inked, I'd buy new ones.

Of course, that's me.  I know a lot of people love their dice a lot :)

Haha.

He GM's a lot for several groups and he supplies all of the materials, so obviously he needs a lot of dice. :)

For games I play, you need ~10d6/player, sometimes more sometimes less.  We generally just leave all the dice in the middle of the table and people grab them as they need them.  Except the GM, he has his own special dice..

hehehe.

With metascape, we tend to use every die type from 4-20 (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 I think?) plus a few others occasionally.

I just use the 6" foam dice when I GM. They cower in fear when they see that D20 roll.

I don't think I've ever seen a d16, but I'd believe that they exist.
