General Discussion / Re: Laptop Shopping
« on: November 10, 2011, 04:29:48 am »
blah blah blah new laptop. I'd like to get it between now and the end of the year (and don't tell me to go to black Friday. Saving $50-80 really isn't worth it). Does any have any recommendations?

same story basically. Except my laptop died. =(

I recently started exercising and eating decently for basically the first time ever. I feel so much better in my daily life it is ridiculous. I don't have trouble sleeping anymore, I can make it through a day of work without being exhausted at the end, and feeling better about myself is leading to massively reduced anxiety. Basically win all around.

This is like, motivation to actually get in shape and eat healthy.

General Discussion / Re: Do you "show respect?"

Example:  I will not respect a military service member unless I know he/she deserves respect.  However, I will be polite.

Why will you be polite, then? That's likely some level of respect you're just dismissing.

Unit testing is a lot older than ruby...

Yeah, but Rubyists and Railers do it at least 100x as much as anyone else.
I've heard you say a lot of retarded things, Joe, but this is easily the most retarded of the last year or so.

How so? Perhaps I should have said "People in the Ruby/Rails culture", or "open source developers in the Ruby/Rails culture". Nobody from a different programming background would ever write a sonnet about testing and present it at a conference, or would you?

The problem is it's just wrong. Companies have been hiring software testers for decades. In case that's not clear, that means there are people who have full time jobs writing tests.

So Ruby developers are the first developers to test their programs? lol. lol x like 10.

General Discussion / Re: US credit rating downgraded
« on: August 07, 2011, 05:36:50 pm »
What simply amazes me is things like this:

However, Obama's chief political strategist, David Axelrod, blamed the conservative tea party movement for the S&P downgrade, saying the linking of a necessary debt ceiling increase to political debate on spending cuts caused the gridlock cited by the ratings agency.

... Axelrod said, adding: "The fact of the matter is that this is essentially a tea party downgrade."

On the same program, Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina disputed Axelrod's contention, arguing that "the tea party's not the problem" and "Washington was broken before they got here."

He blamed Obama for a failure of leadership, calling the president "a casual observer at a time when he needs to be fully engaged."

I love how the dipshits in charge just keep pointing fingers. "IT'S YOUR FAULT!" "NO, IT'S YOUR FAULT!"

How about they shut the fuck up and solve something? I wish I got paid as much as they do to bitch and whine and accomplish nothing.

And it's times like this that I wish I understood economics. But you really can't trust anyone to speak on behalf of the economy. Or on economics. It's amazing how so many different opinions on what to do/what will happen can resonate from people with a common educational background (one vested in econ) and yet they all still get paid to spout what essentially is an educated opinion.

(And the most frustrating thing in the world is when people start discussing economics or politics in a party setting. I don't discuss particles, physics, algorithms, mathematics, or anything else they find boring, why must they spout crap that's probably all incorrect and biased anyway?)

(And it's this subjectivity that is why I prefer physics and CS.)

... I've realized I don't care about computers anymore. I especially hate programming low-level things and would much rather use Perl/Python in 90% of my day-to-day tasks. I'm only doing research to fulfill my Honors requirement, otherwise I've hated all the research I've done, too. At this point, it's not worth it to switch out of my major. So, I'll suck it up.

That's how I feel about physics (hating it, only doing research because it looks good). And why I picked up a second major (computer science). Perhaps consider a minor in something you do enjoy?

16 credits/units.

ECS 152A: Computer Networks
PHY 110C: Relativistic Electricity & Magnetism
PHY 112A: Statistical Mechanics/Thermodynamics
PHY 115B: Quantum Mechanics in 3D Coordinates

Super shitty. May drop the CS class for another physics class: Circuits! It fulfills the lab requirements. Otherwise I have to take an 8hr/week lab course next quarter.

deadly: I took operating systems last quarter. I never went to a single lecture and got a 96% on the final/B+ in the class. It was awesome and almost a fun subject to learn. And writing kernel modules was cool.

stick with things like vinaigrettes.

Oil + vinger and sometimes viniagrette are the only kind I've been using. Mostly the former, since I'll just convince my mom to make me a salad out of apathy.

GOD NO. I just stopped eating burritos all day. Which blows, but hey, salads can be okay from time to time.
Minor pet peeve: vegetarianism != salads. I personally don't like salad.

That was what I was getting at. I'm not going vegetarian - I'm simply doing healthier things. Like eating salads and taking multi-vitamins.

;)

So after a couple doctor visits, they're certain it is migraines. I need to get in better shape to reduce the frequency of attacks but otherwise I was prescribed Imitrex and that seems to do the trick when I take it at the onset of a headache.

Ironically enough, outside of this forum I've gotten no advice to avoid caffeine. The first doctor told me to mix Ibuprofin + caffeine pills (200-400mg! that lady had little clue what she was talking about, that much gives me the shakes) when I got my headaches. The second told me to take caffeine, exercise and eat less fatty foods to make them happen less frequently, and was the one who prescribed my medication.

I will say after taking one of those pills the daily migraine situation went away. I haven't had one since two nights ago. Of course I also started trying to eat/drink/be healthier so maybe that also helped out.

We set off a silent alarm on a mostly abandoned military base this week. Luckily, we saw the cop sitting in front of the building and got out through a back window seconds before security guards rushed in. Phew!

Oh noes! All of the Canadian military catching you storming into their only military base!

Well, now that it's summer, you should try stopping the caffeine pills, etc., and see if it makes a difference.

Yep, way ahead of ya! Cut back on everything. All I've done is sit around, drink water and play Fallout: New Vegas all day for the last... 3-4 days.

And tisk tisk for getting so involved with a frat :P.  The last thing a frat should be is a source of stress in your life.

It was more of something to put on a resume. Running a non-profit organization's finances was a different experience, but yes, you're right: that's why I didn't run for another office. =P

Wait, I'm confused... doctors cost *money*?

And beer is mostly water too. America is weird.
