Title: Board Maintenance
Post by: iago on November 10, 2006, 02:08:06 pm
Me and Sidoh made some changes to the forum today, moving around some boards, merging some, and re-naming/re-tasking others.

If you have any problems or can't find something, let us know.  Nothing got removed.

Here's a list of the changes we made:

ROFLCOPTER~ -> Humor / Entertainment -- This board was merged with Riddles, Jokes and Puzzles (and its subforum, Solved Puzzles).

Academic Discussion -> Academic / School -- The purpose of this board is slightly different.  It's been expanded to include general issues with your school, ie a teacher getting fired.

Programming boards -- Several boards (OSdev, tutorials, project announcements) have been moved to subforums of the General Programming board.

Math and Other Problems -- This is a slightly experimental board.  We're not sure if it's going to be around forever, but we're going to give it a shot.  Ender and I are moderators.

Politics -- New board to house all things politics!  I forgot where I put it.  It's an easter egg hunt!

We need moderators for some of the new boards.  If one looks like something you'd want to moderate, please contact me or another leader and we'll get back to you.

The trash can? I found that humorous. :D

Do the new moderators have to be x86 members? You should specify. :P

You ruined it! >:(

It'll be moved to General Discussion shortly.

No.  Ender's a moderator of the math board. :P

They should typically be members, unless there's a compelling reason.

I'll moderate the Politics forum as long as noone minds me replying with my non-party views and then closing the thread :P

I'll moderate academic boards.
I object.

Shouldn't math be with academics?

'twas what I thought... but eh?

No.  The Math board was created mainly because of the request of Ender.  We're not sure it's going to stick around.

To be blunt, I think it would have been better to just merge boards rather than create new ones.  If you start making too many specialized boards, overall forum activity will go down.

Usually there is a flurry of activity in these new forums and then they quickly die (example (http://www.x86labs.org:81/forum/index.php/board,81.0.html)).

Agreed.

We did these things with the intention of leaving the count of boards the same.  We nuked a few, merged a few and created a few.

Thinking for yourself isn't allowed.  Pick a politician and go with him.

You're right.  That's why one of the main things I said to Sidoh, and he can find the quote if he wants, is that "n` = n, where n is the number of boards".  We did re-arranging and house-keeping, not adding.  If you go down and count the list, we actually ended up with less (because I made some low-traffic but valuable boards into sub-boards)

Do you see any new boards?

We merged some, and re-named some.  That's it.

So I win.  Ha!

The math board.

That's an example of one that's been renamed.

Yep, we renamed 'riddles' to 'math'.

Hooray for cheating! :)

But yeah, the Math board is the only board that is technically "new".  But we eliminated at least 3 other boards from the main page, so we still ended up better off.  And it won't be around forever, unless it stays good and active, Ender wanted a project-board, so ender's getting a project-board :)

I'll join the political party "iagis". They tend to represent my view best.. at least relative to the other shitty groups.
