Title: Riddles
Post by: Sidoh on August 06, 2005, 02:39:28 pm
When we were distributing the build image in my high school lab, my boss and I exchanged riddles. He had some really good ones, so I whipped up a quick 'module' on my website and added a few I could think of. I'll populate the list with more riddles later on.

Priate Treasure (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=1)
Egg Yolks (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=2)
Cowboy (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=3)
Socks (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=4)

Bleh. Here's a list (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=list) of them.

I hate riddles. Actually I like them, but I hate them too because I can never get them. That Cowboy one was easy though!

I got screwed on the egg thing, dang it!

I messed up on the pirate one, but all the others were easy.

The egg one is wrong. "The Answer:
Even in English egg yolks are yellow."

The question is grammatical, in which case the second answer is correct.  The answer given is the technical answer.

Additionally, they are all EASY.

To go with the socks one, you should have another question "How many do you have to pull out to guarentee you have two different colors."

It's a trick question. I assume you've encountered them?

Submit your own then, asshole.

You'd have to give more information (or the answer would contain variables, obviously).

Please -- feel free to submit your own. Post 'em here and I'll add them.

It's a valid question with an invalid answer.  There is a difference.  And I will submit some as soon as I find my good ones.

Pffffff, these are from memory! Kthxbai!

God damnit, it's a trick question. It makes you think beyond an answer!

Egg yolks are white. Never seen yellow egg yolk... what the hell are you guys smoking?

That's an egg WHITE. The yolk is the yellow thing in the middle.

I will unfortunately have to agree with RaBBiT here.  The question says "Which is proper English", and "Egg yolks are white" is proper English.

If you want to switch it to "Which is correct", then you're doing good.

Also, for my socks question, you'd have to say "there are 20 socks of each color..." which is what you should also say with your Socks question.  Extra facts help mislead people :)

Hehe, true.

I suppose I could make the answer something like:

Quote
The correct of the two is Egg yolks are white, but even in English, egg yolks are Yellow.

Or you can change the question to, "Which of these is correct?" and the answer to "Neither -- ..."

Hehe, true.

Quote
The correct of the two is Egg yolks are white, but even in English, Egg Yolks are Yellow.

That would still contradict what rabbit is saying, since he's stating the answer does not directly correlate with the question. I changed it. =)

There's an old homless lady who collects cigarette butts.  She's been doing it for so long, she has it down to a science: exactly 8 butts provides enough tobacco to make one new cigarette.  One day, she finds 64 butts.  How many cigarettes can she make?

The soldier one isn't funny, and applies to any cemetary. It may just not be funny to me because I've heard it a ton of times. My mom always (ever since I was little, when she did it like everytime, but now it's less frequent) says it when we go by the cemetary that's near our house.

Umm... 8? :D

And yeah, I phrased that question wrong, kinda. It's supposed to be:

How many of the soldiers in Alrlington Cemetary are buried there?

What about the ones doing 21-gun salutes at funerals while several other soldiers attend?

None. She doesn't make them, she just collects them? :(

You're both wrong.

The answer is 9 -- 8 for the ones she finds.  Then she smokes the 8, and makes 1 more.  Aha!

That's pretty good, lol

I added a few more this afternoon, they're all really good.

River Crossing (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=14) (A Classic)
Apples & Oranges (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=15)
Gold Coins (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=16)
Wise Men (http://sidoh.dark-wire.net/?fuseaction=modules.riddles&a=show&id=17)

There's two in particular I want to add, but their answers are going to require me to do some HTML formatting since they contain tables (they're both pretty long answers).

Riddles are word problems.

A riddle is a form of literature designed to test the reader/listeners ingenuity (ability to think creatively.)

I was referring to a world problem in the sense of a word problem in math class. I seem to consider them similar, but certainly different things. Riddles, in my opinion, are more of a play on words type of thing, not something you should have to work out with paper and pencil.

A riddle is a problem that involves words. Riddles are world problems. Kthxbai.

I just added another really good one.

Your 'riddles' suck then and aren't worth doing. Kthxbai.

Edit:

I don't get that last riddle. If I was put in this situation I would have asked him which one he went down, since he obviously didn't get rich or famous.

I was forced to figure out a very similar question once, except that it involved 2 people: one always lied, and one always told the truth.  You could ask either of them one question.  The solution is basically the same.

Haha, Trust sounds jealous!

I wonder if we should make a forum for Riddles/Puzzles/Jokes.  Somebody could make a new thread for a riddle/whatever without the answer, and it can be figured out or discussed by the members without getting mixed up with others.

Thoughts?

Since iago replied, it would be pointless to edit my other post again, but don't forget it's there!

Point of information directed to Sidoh: In your top image it says "Beware my wraith" - A wraith is the plane thingy in Starcraft, or a ghost that comes back to avenge it's own death. I'm thinking maybe that should have been 'Beware of my wrath." :)

That one doesn't make sense, as it says you can only ask 1 question, but then the answer says you ask 2...

No it doesn't.

If you posed the question in a similar manner:

Is this the correct path?

If he tells the truth, he will say yes. If he lies, he will say no.

My answer on this one was kind of vague, I need to edit it and go into more detail.

Oh! Sorry about that iago, I passed that over.

And yes! I think it's a great idea. :)

Then don't do them if you can't figure them out.  Your 'answers' suck  ;D

And no, that wouldn't work. He ALWAYS lies or ALWAYS tells the truth, regardless of the question posed.
