*pokes Ergot*

www.linuxquestions.org has a complete section of their forum about how to install Slackware.  If you have problems, you might get an answer there.

Well, I was talking to Warrior, but he exploded.

Anyways, here's what happened:
1. CD ROM boot failed, switched to bare.i boot floppy
2. Bad compressed format (?), failed
3. Flashed BIOS from floppy
4. DOS 5 boot floppy, can't read HD (which is triple faulted says Warrior).
5. Re-downloading disc 1 to make a new CD which may or may not work
6. In the event of the CD not working, A:\>emo /wrists

Installed!

But alas, new problems.

Whenever I try to boot, the message "Error loading OS" comes up.

I can load using the bare.i bootdisk I made during the install, but even still, I don't know how to get KDE (or whatever) running.

Help!

Help!

Boot off Slackware's CD.

When prompted for boot:, type:
bare.i root=/dev/hda1 noinitrd ro
[replace /dev/hda1 with whereever Linux is installed to]

That should load up the Linux installation that you just installed.  Once it's loaded, log in as root, run "liloconfig", then run "lilo".  Hopefully lilo will run successfully.

When running liloconfig:
- Use Advanced
- Store it in the MBR
Every other option should just be common sense

Good luck

Well, I loaded with startx and bam, that worked.  Now I'm up and running, all I need to do is get an antenna or a long cat5 cable and it'll be in my network!

[edit]
liloconfig is running, and now the big question: how do I change the name?  It's defaulted to darkstar....speaking of which...

Okay, when I try bare.i ... it says "No such image.  [Tab] shows a list"

My only option is "Linux"

Asume hostname USWest.

su -c "hostname uswest"
su -c "echo 'uswest' > /etc/hostname"
su -c "reboot now"

The first line may be unneeded. I don't remember.

EDIT -
You'll be prompted for a password, its the password you used when you set it up, etc. If you're running as root, just type the stuff thats in quotes. I don't know if its reboot or not, maybe its restart? One of the two.

Joe...what the hell are you talking about?  The prompt is for booting, prior to login.

Then after login ... you open a terminal and type that in to change your hostname (computer name).

If you boot off the CD, Lilo shouldn't come up.  You should get a different kind of prompt.

But if Lilo is coming up, that probably means that you pointed it at the wrong harddrive.

I know, but that wasn't answering my question.  I made a seperate thread for the name issue.

That's all?  Haha, the run to my computer from my switch is at least 300 ft.

Ha, my computers are side by side, and the router is right above them! <10 feet of cable.

I used half a box of 1000' CAT-5 cable by the time I was done with my room and my server room.

And that was how much?

Anyways, CD-ROM and floppy drives, are they /mnt/cdrom and /mnt/floppy?  If they are, there's nothing showing up.  If they aren't what are the CD-ROM and floppy paths?

[edit]
Nevermind.  Ergot is sexy.

Haha.  My boss let me have a box of CAT-5 cable since my school doesn't use it any more.

Rabbit: No they are in /dev (Devices). /mnt is a temporary folder which is normally used for mounting block devices (You can mount them anywhere really). Do "man mount" for more information on mounting devices. I believe you can specify which Filesystem and RW flags not sure though.

FUCK.  I completely forgot to ship that cable, rabbit.  I was so goddamn busy this week.  It'll probably be a while before I'll have the chance again since the school is locked and I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow, but I'll try to get around to it. :(

Wtf are you talking about? Did you mount them right? Is there something in them?

Mounting is not an issue anymore, and besides, my CD-ROM is /dev/hdd and my DVD-ROM is /dev/hdc.  I don't care all that much about floppy right now, but if I need to I can just use /dev/floppy...
