Title: Israel vs. Hezbollah, Iran, Palestine... The Middle East*
Post by: leet_muffin on July 23, 2006, 09:49:40 pm
I was just curious how you all feel about the recent fighting in and around Israel. It's starting to flare up a bit. I think it may develope into something of good size.

What's your take on things? Who do you think should have the land? Should America get involved? How 'bout the UN?

I think the UN should be involved, but we all know they won't be because they're an ineffectual pandering organization, so it'll be the US, UK, and Aussies again.

They've been byilding up for a long time, and they were bound to have a war for something or the other.

Hopefully the UN will be involved in some way, although I don't think that they should fight.  I think that the middle east needs to fight it out themselves, without our interference.  I don't like the idea of picking sides in somebody else's fault.

So, what you're saying is, despite the fact that Israel made a lot of concessions (including territory) and pulled their troops immediately out of the conflict zone the last time they had the major conflict with (right now I can't remember the name of the country, Lebanon I think), now that they're being threatened by people who would indiscriminately wipe out their population, we shouldn't "pick sides"?

Also, see the title. Tiny little Israel (and our beloved Yoni) is getting their heads handed to them on a plate by an entire region of the world. Fair fight?

Should it be expected that you face some sort of consequences for claiming a large chunk of land to people mostly of your relgion, despite the other religion in the area?
I wonder what would happen if I went into a NAACP meeting and claimed a few tables for myself and other whites. Would you help me?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Israel strike the first blow?  I heard from somewhere that Israel captured Lebanese (or whatever) soldiers, to Lebanon did the same thing back, and of course (like flamewars), it escaladed.  Whether or not that's true (I have no source), the rest of what I say still applies.

And also, didn't Israel originally take the land from others?  I don't think the current Israelies have been there forever.  And that goes exactly opposite to what you said.

They've been fighting amongst themselves as long as I can remember.  There's been constant suicide bombings and tons of tension.  There was bound to be a war there eventually, it was only a matter of time.  They really have to fight, somebody has to win, and some government has to control the important part of the region.  As bad as it is, having all these little territories with their own religion and hating everybody else is causing too many problems.  Unless the US is going to occupy every country over there, somebody has to step in and stop the internal fighting.

You have it backwards......Hezbollah captured 2 Israeli soldiers which is what sparked Israel to retaliate

Yes, and our (US) support of their moving (both through simple help and through supplying them weapons) is what has caused most of the Middle East to hate us (US). We (US) helped them out to begin with to pacify them after we (US) kinda' ignored them (Jews) in WWII/Holocaust.

Like I said, from what I've been told, Israel did that first, then the other side captured israeli soldiers in retaliation.

Hezbollah's leader responded that Hezbollah was adventurous when asked why the captured the Israeli soldiers. So clearly it was not in retaliation.

I really think it was bound to happen; they're has been fighting there ever since the state of Israel was established. Also, I think Israel should keep the land.  They fought for it and won so many years ago. It reminds me of the Native Americans and the US.  We won; it's our land.

I don't feel that the US needs to be involved in this conflict; it is not our job to police the world when there are so many problems in our country.  The UN will probably get involved in humanitarian aid and whatnot. I really don't see what else they can do.

A few things that annoy me are: (1) The extensive media coverage of this in America.  I do not want to hear about Israel every time I flip on the television. Yes, it's important, but I'd rather hear about what they are doing with illegal immigration in the Senate. (2) The criticism of Israel's retaliation.  I think it's great that Israel values the lives of its people so much. Perhaps if America valued her soldiers' lives more, we'd be done in Iraq.

Wasn't the land a British colony or something, & then after WWII we all gave it to them?

In response to the media thing, I think it is covered about enough. However, I do think that media should stop covering other bullshit, such as anything to do with celebrities, and replace it with other issues, such as Senate coverage on the immigration stuff. And other stuff. I think the Israel issue should be in the media a bit, considering the potential of a nuclear war.
