Title: Dude pays BIG tax bill with SMALL bills and coins
Post by: CrAz3D on August 15, 2007, 01:12:35 PM

heh.  Rather amusing.  I've always thought that'd be fun to do if I had something to pay that I didn't agree with.

I don't know about the US, but here there are laws (or maybe conventions) about rejecting change after a certain amount if it's unrolled. I imagine the same goes for bills if it's a big amount.

I think it was all rolled and wrapped.  That's what it looks like in the video.

Wow, what an asshole for making all the other taxpayers wait while they count out the money.

I've never heard of anything like that and afaik if its valid US currency it has to be accepted. Especially so for a government agency.

Only makes sense for them to have to accept legal tender otherwise what is the point in having legal tender?

Money is used to pay for things, yeah?
Bills are paid with money, yeah?
He paid his bills with his money, yeah?

Okey dokey.

Being an asshole isn't illegal or the internet would be empty

And that's why it's good to either have a law or convention dictating cases where you don't have to put up with assholes. Perhaps in the US, you're more accustomed to it? :P

I think this is a more ingenuis form of protest than even the guy who did it likely knows. He's pissed that his property taxes are high, so he's being an asshole. He also said that it is hard to grasp how much money it is when you're writing a check, and I think that's definately true. But what I don't think he realizes is that is also an awesome way to protest this giant fucking huge government we have. By paying it like that, it's costing tax payers even more money. This is pretty much par for the course in government, yet they're complaining about it! They handle everything else in the stupidest, longest, hardest way possible... why shouldn't people be paying taxes in $1 bills?

I'm having a hard time putting my thoughts into writing... but you can probably get the idea of what I mean!

Awesome! He's really sticking it to the man by making the day of a civil servant (who probably already hates his job) even worse than usual, not to mention the people in line behind him who had to wait. Take that, government!

Protesting against the government is well and good, but I don't think this type of thing will really be noticed.

I understand that, and I totally don't support people doing something like that, it was just an interesting thought that popped into my head.

The internet *does* cause global warming, probably a shitload of it. When you think of all the carbon put into the atmosphere from production of all the hardware for the network infastructure, computers that would never have been purchased if there wasn't an internet, the fuel burned to power everything, the cars of all the workers.... it's gotta be a shitload.

But Al Gore invented the Internet (http://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue5_10/wiggins/)! He must use it!

In the US we can't have laws that dictate that you don't have to put up with someone because they're annoying, at least for big companies/federal agencies.  They have to deal with everyone.  I think only small businesses can refuse service based on "whatever the hell they may please" (like being black).

Like I said before.  You use money to pay for things (bills included).  This man used the money to pay his bills, therefore he used the money how it was meant to be used.

And I see pics of Al Gore on the Internet with his mega huge 23048234 inch Apple monitor TOTALLY killing the environment (huge screen + Apple = Al Gore is going to hell because smaller screen + Windows = more environmentally friendly)

If that's the biggest environmental problem Al Gore's made, he's doing pretty good.

What I don't understand is, who cares? It has nothing to do with this thread, it's just a random stab against Gore...

I didn't bring Gore up, just thought I'd throw it out there.  Also, I'm pretty sure Gore's house is less green the Bush's, but I'm gonna have to double check.  I know Gore is horribly unenvironmentally friendly, though

It's not their job for putting up with assholes. If somebody came into my store when I used to work with cash, and brought in a significant amount of change, it pissed me off. It would make me angry, and ruin my day, and their "protest" wouldn't do a thing. It's not their job to put up with stupid things.

I'm sure the other "customers" (funny word) who are paying their taxes know how crazy taxes are.

Then why don't companies pay their employees with one dollar bills and pennies too so the employee can "grasp" how much they're making.

Whether or not the tax payer was trying to be an asshole in his attempt at protesting, the person on the other end of the counter is still being paid to do their job.  I do agree that it's not one's job to put up with stupid things, but in an isolated incident like this, does it really matter?  If you had to do it on a day-to-day basis, then it'd definitely be worth making a fuss over.

Besides, the way you feel is a choice made by you, especially if it's something that you allow to get under your skin when it really doesn't have to be that way at all.

Personally, I think his "protest" would've been more effective had he included others in on it, but either way, it's still going to be money lost for the parties on both ends.

I dont know what the policies for private busineses are, but if I was a cashier for a gov't entity I'd have to accept it
