Title: Demonoid shutdown
Post by: Killer360 on September 25, 2007, 08:06:34 PM
http://torrentfreak.com/demonoid-shut-down-by-cria-070925/

Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers has allegedly been taken offline by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA). Both the tracker and the website have been unresponsive for nearly 24 hours now.

As of now it is still unsure what exactly happened, but the popular Dutch news site nu.nl reports that the CRIA is responsible for the downtime.

TorrentFreak contacted some of the Demonoid administrators, but they are not sure what happened either. It is certainly possible that Demonoid's Canadian ISP pulled the plug after being pressured by the CRIA. The Demonoid server is still pinging, but the ISP could have firewalled the everything after they received some serious legal threats. Deimos, the founder and the head admin of the site is unreachable and has not responded yet.

This is not the first time Demonoid suffers major downtime due to pressure from the anti-piracy lobby. Demonoid had to move its servers from The Netherlands to Canada in June after The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a subpoena against Demonoid's ISP. BREIN had asked the ISP to take Demonoid offline and hand over the administrator's personal details, but Demonoid relocated their servers before any harm was done.

Unfortunately, it now seems that Canada is not the "safe haven" as they expected it to be.

Demonoid tracks over a million .torrent files and is the second largest BitTorrent tracker after The Pirate Bay. The shutdown of the site and tracker is a huge blow for the BitTorrent community that lost 2 of the most popular BitTorrent trackers (TorrentBox was taken offline for US users a few hours ago) within 24 hours.

How come every time a tracker goes down, everyone thinks it has to do with a takedown?

Tracking sites always run to safe countries before they go to court. Always.

We received a letter from a lawyer represeting the CRIA, they were threatening with legal action and we need to start blocking Canadian traffic because of this.

Thanks for your understanding, and sorry for any inconvenience.
Haha, Canadians.

Whatever, my ISP prolly won't block it. Some ISP's here in Canada block torrent traffic, but mine doesn't.

I think the order was for demonoid to block Canadian ISPs, not the other way around.

OiNK is better than 0day; they've got shit weeks before it comes out. They're negative-day.

Do the trackers block Canadian IP addresses? It's rather difficult to get around that.

Some bittorent clients such as Azureus support proxies.

What I meant was that you can't tell the client to only connect through the proxy to talk to the tracker (because the swarm will determine that you are an intruder when it sees the IP address mismatch). Only applies to private torrents, though.

He is 16 (just turned 16, in fact).  He's a clever fellow!

I'm not completely familiar with the program, but he earns his high school diploma while concurrently gaining college credit, meaning he'll have a degree when he's 20, I think?
