Hey, I was wondering if anyone can make a recommendation for me for a laptop. If you know one on newegg or something post a linky! :)
This is what I want:
<= $670
- Possible to play directX 9 games with.
- 1 GB+ (considering 512)
- 30GB HDD+ :P (I have an external)
- Wireless network card
- No dead pixels, major scratches (good condition)
- WinXP+
I heard AMDs run hot in laptops? True?
EDIT: Spelling.
Yeah, but laptops typically run hot anyway. Stay away from Gateway laptops, even if you have to cut off your testicles (it would be less painful to castrate yourself, by the way).
I just bought this laptop for about $100 cheaper (CDN) than listed in this site maybe a month and a half ago - http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3114279 (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3114279) - It was an impulse buy that I felt I deserved for working very hard all summer. I put it on the business account as a bonus to myself.
Not a bad machine. Came with Vista (home basic) which I quickly ignored and booted Ubuntu. nice little machine. Small too!
Great!, Thanks!
To rabbit: Yeah, we had a gateway a long time ago and we had nothing but problems and tech support sucked..
AMD's run hot and are battery whores.
Thanks! :D
I've had this Toshiba Satellite since last year and it hasn't given me any problems at all, comes with an Atheros wireless card. It only has 512mb RAM though but thats enough for me. I got it for $399 from Bestbuy. I heard Sony Vaio's are pretty nice too, don't get a Dell though, my friend has one and it gives him all sorts of problems(sound not working).
I have a Dell laptop and a Gateway. I've had both of them for more than/almost a year (I bought the gateway last december) and I haven't had any problems with either of them, save for the battery on the Dell dying out (which apparently isn't covered by the warranty? ... ).
I've met people who have had both good and bad experiences with Gateway. I, personally, haven't had a single problem with mine. One of my friends on campus also has a Gateway tablet (for a longer time than me) and he hasn't had any problems either...
My Dell laptop is great. I've had (almost) no problems. There was a minor issue with the Vista beta, and the Source engine disagrees with my computer (I'll fix that), but nothing that isn't fixable.

My Centrino Gateway runs way better than my AMD HP.
I'd keep away from HP ANYTHING. It's all shitty. Fucking put together by gooks who are instructed by blacks who are owned by jews...sheesh
Gateway has never failed me in Laptops. Picked one up for $550 on special a few weeks ago, best deal I ever got on a Laptop.
Came with Home Premium, Gig of Ram, and a capable video card (Doesn't come to mind atm).
The design of the laptop is pretty solid and I have not bad any bad experiences.
Yeah...for 2 weeks.

You're dumb. You say this in every thread about laptops, presumably because of a negative personal experience. If you want anecdotal evidence, of the three people I know with gateway laptops, two of them have had one for more than 2 years now no problems as of yet.

I rather like my Gateway tablet. :P

My AMD laptop was the only laptop I've ever had (I've had three) in which the processor melted.

I've had mine for almost a year without a single problem. I've had more problems with my Dell (and the battery problem started occurring after about 8 months of owning it).
Seriously, one (or a few) bad personal experience doesn't make the company suck.
Do you guys realize I was talking to Warrior, who said he only had a Gateway for a couple weeks>.

Even so, I've seen you make a few very general statements without adding the "but that's just my experience" disclaimer.
Personal experience nothing. Everyone I know who has a Gateway laptop has had big problems with it. Their desktops are fine, but they are utter fail in the laptop market.

Apparently not. I use mine consistently about 8-10 hours per day at work. And school. And it's awesome.

I know quite a few people with gateway laptops and, other than you, I've never heard anyone have any sort of mentionable problem.
A couple of instances doesn't make the entire branch of the company suck.

My Dell battery died over the summer, too, and I was disappointed about the warranty not covering it as well. :(
