Title: Anyone here hunt or are gun hobbyists?
Post by: CrAz3D on November 18, 2007, 02:51:48 PM
I'd like to get a decent rifle for hunting.  I've never been but would like to go out sometime.  Friends have recommended a .30 06 because it works to hunt pretty much anything.
Any helpful thoughts or suggestions?

Also looking for a .45 pistol (I'm thinking 1911, like the way it handles) and getting my CCW.

I don't like hunting. It's only for sport these days anyways.  ::)

Hunting is a sport...but it's a tasty sport!

Unless you're out for coyotes or something, then you just shoot 'em cause you get money to.

I've only been a few times, but a 7mm rifle seemed to be good for antelope, deer, elk, and moose. For those pesky grouse and pheasants, I had a 20 gauge. Jesus, my 20 gauge kicked harder than any gun I've ever shot. My dad's 12 gauge kicked less than it!

I own a
30.6
.308
12 Gage
20 Gage
.357 Pistol
.22 Pistol
and a few other misc guns, and personally hunting, I completely love my .308 lever action, it's probably the best hunting rifle I've ever used, Both can be used from squirrels to bear.

What makes?

I hear remington .30 06.
For the .45, I liked the Colt 1911, not so much the S&W

That looks pretty decent.  I read a lot of good stuff about the accutrigger system

Find out if your senator can help you go hunting w/ Cheney.

CrAz3D: Why do you feel the need to carry a gun around? We might have gone over this before, but I honestly don't see the need for.

Yeah, a large knife or brass knuckles make you look way cooler.

Just because I have it doesn't mean I will use it.

Also, I don't need a CCW to carry openly in NM.  I can go nearly anywhere wearing it openly.

.30 06 is pretty decent for hunting. I shot one 'till my arm failed to work anymore, which isn't too long.

Also, pick up an AR-15. Not for hunting, just for.. having the best gun ever made.

The word "hunting" reminds me of Dick Cheney.

By the way, with the amount of recoil coming out of that gun, and the size of my shoulder, that was only about... 20-30 rounds.

20-30 rounds would obliterate a squirrel, I LIKE IT! ha

Leanin towards a Savage .30 06 with the accutrigger system.
And then not too sure about a Colt 1911 or a S&W 9mm...hmm

If you have that much money... Hah. I was just talking to my neighbor (He just got back from deer hunting in Montana) He shot a deer with a .30 06 on the trip, shot it dead on, hit the spine, and it actually lifted the front of the deer a few feet in the air. So yeah, get one of those.

1911 > S&W 9. Bottom line.

Well, eventually I'll have a .45 and a 9, however, deciding which to go for, first.  Maybe buy myself the rifle and ask for the 9 for Christmas (that'd be pushing it as far as cost goes, though :-\).

Really, the price of the .30-06 I'm looking at (a Savage) + the price of the 9mm is about that of the Colt 1911.

My father just shot a nice buck today with his .308.

So mm, get a .308.

30 06, I hear, is more versatile.  If you load your own cartridges you can shoot just about whatever.  At some point I'd like to go after an elk, too.
