How so?

In the context of the study, saying "you drive like a woman" is a comparison.

So, "you drive like a nigger" isn't racist? I'm sure if they did some tests there'd be a slight difference... so it's a comparison!

First of all, the actual study had nothing to do with driving; it was about spatial awareness, the idiotic reporter just spun it to look like that.

Second, even with the logical conclusion that women navigate by landmarks and men navigate by a heightened sense of direction, who's to say that either one is better, or even more importantly, that it has anything to do with driving skill whatsoever?

Third, you still drive like a gay man, CrAz3D!

See, trust drives like a nigger/negro/black guy.  You dont have to use nigger, that word on its own would be the racist part.  Saying "you drive like a woman/ho/bitch" would be derogatory because of the ho/bitch, not woman

Please.  The use of the word "nigger" as it is used on these forums is rarely if ever racist.  When it was used in a racist fashion was when a group of people used it to refer to another whom they implicitly believed were inferior to them.  I believe few if any people on this forum don't know better than to think that way, and when people say "nigger" now, it's primarily for shock factor.  It's considered taboo, and so it's used to draw out the taboo.  When people claim this is racism, it further dilutes the meaning of racism in such a way to make it harder for us to recognize real racism.  Just let it go - it doesn't make you cool, it just makes people sound like retards.

It's not!  And it has nothing to do with the study.  It's because the expression "you drive like a woman" is a joke that is funny because of the natural tension caused by the psychology of ingroup/outgroup behavior and classification.

If said among a group of only guys: it's funny because the guys can bond over it and edify their ingroup efficacy.
If said among a mixed group of men and women: it's funny because it creates a clear distinction between the men and women, simultaneously driving a wedge between the groups and increasing group efficacy of each group.
Note that it would rarely if ever be said by a man to a woman alone or to a group of women because it wouldn't make sense (though I have to say, I have a friend who would say it in this context, but like so many things he says, it wouldn't be funny).

GET OVER IT.  HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR!

As I was thinking about it, there's another component to this.

Men tend to notice more frequently when women are driving like idiots than when other men are driving like idiots because women are in the outgroup.  People tend to notice or even perceive offenses committed by outgroups more frequently than those committed by members of the ingroup because of the natural biases people develop (the entire reason we develop groups in our minds - to conserve cognitive resources by developing heuristics to formulate opinions about other people quickly).

Saying that a man drives like a woman totally defeats the purpose of saying it, because you're admitting that women can drive like men.

You just got beat by Joe. But don't worry.. well, maybe you should.

Why am I an idiot? Is it because I like beat down low, and my top let back? Cause you can see me ridin' 24's with a chopper in the back? Cause I like my Kenwood high and your top let back? Or because my rims sit high and my windows pitch black?

It takes a group of people, applies a stereotype to all of them, then demeans that group by making fun of that stereotype. That's basically the definition of racism/sexism. I think there's a strong difference between having a sense of humour and laughing at racist/sexist comments.

It isn't a stereotype, it's an average occurrence

But it isn't demeaning unless you (as the member of the group) take it to be!  That's the whole point!  Nobody ever means anything by it - that's why it's funny!  It's just like when Newby calls someone a "nigger" - I think I can gauge his personality well enough to know that he doesn't mean it in the same way as I described in my post.  A word isn't intrinsically "-ist" in any way - it's all about who's saying it and what they mean.

But it is demeaning, because people do mean something by it. I don't know what the proper name is, but I've heard it called passive racism. It's really the same as calling somebody a fag, which is passive gay bashing. For the joke to actually be understood, you have to understand that we're superior to women/black people/homosexuals in some way, so applying their traits to somebody is funny.

In other words, by saying that someone being a woman/black person/homosexual is bad, you're implying that those traits are bad, and, thus, it's racism, albeit passive.

So I was playing Girltalk for my mom today when I was driving home, which was kind of weird. She was picking out the old songs the rap is mixed with (it has Elton John, Styx, Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac, etc.)

It's a good CD to bump with the windows down and seats leanin'.
