Can anyone think of something better for about the same price? (No iPod, I don't want to become a robbery statistic!)
Thats...not an MP3 player.
Yeah it is. It also displays pictures (JPG or BMP). & with the correct firmware you can watch videos.

It's for recording and storing audio from the radio, or converting CD files to MP3 format to play over the radio. It doesn't store MP3 files which you can play with headphones.

You can always just get a PSP its great. :)
PlayStation.com - PSP
There's a creative Zen of some sort that can do all of that. My dad mentioned it to me once. Look around for it.
Newby sorry, but I do not know?

40GB NOMAD Creative Zen Xtra
I read a review that compared Creative Touch & the iRiver...iRiver sound quality was better & interface more liked.
Bought the 40gig iRiver today
I have the 20 gig Dell, pretty good. My friends have iPods and have to recharge them every few hours, mine can last for a lot longer. My brother has the Zen and likes that one too. The Dell is a little smaller then the Zen, and the same price.
The iPod battery stuff is exaggerrated imho. I recharge mine every few days. It runs for at least an hour when the battery icon is completely empty.
I'm not trying to exaggerate anything, my friend Mike had to get 2 new ones untill his battery worked the suggested amout of time that it should. Now that one has worked since Christmas, but now it won't even start for him.
Just cause the icon says there is no more battery doesn't mean there is no more battery.
The iPod is said to last 12 yrs while my iRiver is supposed to last 16
