Title: [US] Government cheez
Post by: Camel on June 14, 2008, 07:51:54 PM
I just got my $600 check from the government today. I know it's supposed to encourage spending, but I'd be lying if I said it isn't going directly in to my savings account.

Anyone have good plans for it?

I'm going to use it to pay the government back next year when they take it back.

I had to buy new tires; it's paying off those, and the rest is going into my savings account for my vacation to Australia this winter.  Ironic. ;)

That's going to be awesome. My grandparents went to Australia for a month two winters ago and the place is just beautiful.

There's some deadline for when you're supposed to get it by which, IIRC, has something to do with the month you were born in.

I thought it was w/the first letter of your last name?

That sounds plausible, but the first letter of my last name is A, and I was in the middle. In any case, the important thing is that I got my check already :P

It's actually two plane rides.

Dec. 19th I leave PHX at 8:45am local time and arrive HNL at 12:10pm local time (6:25 hours in the air).
Dec. 20th I leave HNL at 12:05pm local time and arrive SYD at 7:20pm on Dec. 21st (10:15 hours in the air).

The return trip is freakier:
Jan 4th I leave SYD at 9:20pm local time and arrive HNL at 10:10am local time (9:50 hours in the air)
Jan 4th I leave HNL at 3:20pm local time and arrive PHX at 11:59pm local time (5:39 hours in the air) with massive jet lag.

But I get a full two weeks in Aus!

HAHA! My return trip from Japan was very similar. We arrived in Denver on the same day, before we took off from Japan. It fucked my internal clock up something fierce.

I'm going to enjoy myself on Dec. 20, just because I know that you're totally going to miss it! Ha!

But, I'll enjoy myself on January 4th, twice as long as you possibly could! :p

It's the last 2 digits of your social that decides when you get your check. http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=180250,00.html

Yeah.  Sucks.  About how much did you pay in taxes last year?

I'm in the same boat as you, pal. I also paid almost $2000 in taxes; my job I had during school didn't take much money out for taxes each payday, and I ended up getting pissed on by the IRS.

You say that like it is uncommon. The IRS tends to screw most people by confusing them in to thinking they owe more money than they do.
