It's pretty annoying that her name is He. He should be disqualified for the fact that this sentence is ambiguous.

No real surprise there, China's pretty stupid.

I feel bad for the girl, though. I mean, come on, she won the gold, even if she was underage. That would suck to have them go "ok because your government lied you don't get a medal SORRY."

Anyone know why the age rule is even there?  I mean it's not like it gives her an unfair advantage...

I think it's to prevent the exploitation of children.

Of course, since those kids train since the time they're like 2 anyways, I don't think it's helping.

Apparently it does.  Something about the uneven bars being spaced better for younger kids or something.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

Ah.  I wonder how much of an advantage it is?  That'd mean the shorter gymnasts would have the same advantage, right?

Being young, they have a different body type that allows them more flexibility and a large advantage over older, more matured women (this was all YELLED at me by gymnastics nazi friends I have ... they are uber pissed to see these girls competing).

It isn't about child exploitation so much

Basically.  Don't get me wrong, the USA team screwed up, but when there was a tie and it went to the cheating country, fuck that business

Yeah, that's crap.  I don't think I caught that event.  The only gymnastics event I watched was the balance beam.

I only caught the last bit of uneven (girlfriend called ranting).  APPARENTLY the Chinese kid wasn't marked as low by some judge for some mistakes as the American woman (this could be American athlete bias talking, you know how women are), then the tie breaking thing was somewhat of a slap in the face.

Yep, certainly only women only ever show American bias.

Also, most gymnastics are fairly rough on the body, especially a young body, and could/would lead to quite a bit of comlications down the road. I cringed when they said stunted growth, because 90% of the time that means everything about it is a lie, but who knows. At least it makes more sense than coffee stunting your growth.
