what is good.
my linksys wrt54g went to shit, and I'm getting uber fucking pissed at my week old F5d8236-4 belkin N router. I cant even set a fucking admin password on it.
no firmware updates: http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D8236-4&aid=14396&scid=942
I love my wrt54g. Shit happens, that's the nature of electronics, but I've never personally had an issue with one.
I just use an old 233MHz P2 with FreeBSD...but probably could build an Intel Atom router for approximately the same as a brand new router. Best of all, it won't suck.

It probably would if crazed tried to build it :)

it would way suck. that's why I buy pre-built shit.
guess I'll return the POS belkin and pick up a netgear or linksys. suggestions?
My router just went out on my too. Luckly I had an extra laying around.
belkin back at walmart, picked up a linksys N. hopefully this dont go out. I'll shoot a mother fucker.
Being in the same boat as you, recently having a WRT54G go to shit.. I bought a WRT54G. Eh? It's suck or big suck, so pick suck.
I'd recommend checking out DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php). It's free, pretty easy to install, and packed with neat features that don't come with the factory firmware.

Same. An old P3 1 GHz with 64MB RAM running FreeBSD. :)

Any atom system is way cooler/better than any ARM/MIPS router (Linksys/Netgear/D-Link) you could buy. You'd just need to invest a few hours of your time to assemble it and set it up.
What would he get out of it that a store-bought router couldn't provide?
I'm very sure there are many things that a BSD router can do that a store-bought router cannot do. That's not the question, though.

and many more hours learning those features and how to use them ;P

At the very least, something that doesn't suck. Other than that, probably not much unless he intended to do something fancy. I have to admit though, having ssh on your router much better than any fancy web interface. I find myself using my router as a secure tunnel whenever I'm on public networks so its quite beneficial over store-bought routers in such a case.
Which then begs the question... why is it anywhere near worth the effort unless you're intending to do something "fancy"?
Having any box that you can SSH into can be used as an SSH tunnel. There's no reason it has to be a router? :\

While I tend to think using a base install of Linux or *BSD is better. You could certainly bypass the pain with m0n0wall or pfsense.

Let's say you're like most people and own one computer. SSH to what when you're out an about with your one computer?
Effort? This is fun! I like to reveal other options no matter how impractical you or others might think they are.

That's fine. I'm just pointing out that it's probably not a great solution for someone who doesn't want to fuck around with BSD for two days just to get a working router. ;P

Like I said, pfsense/m0n0wall should be as easy as OpenWRT.

Have you _talked_ to CrAz3d?
Craz3d, if you really don't care. Your best bet is to buy another Linksys or similar
He already did. :)

At least someone pays attention ;).
Using BSD to create my own router would be hell. Very not worth my time.
I forgot the post the picture of my former WRT54G. Its potential for repair has been severely diminished (.45 ACP > Linksys router).

Did you play that rap song from office space while you were smashing the shit out of it?
I should have. (there was no smashing, I shot it)
