Title: Looking for more classic, well-known gaming terms.
Post by: warz on August 05, 2009, 09:30:42 PM
I'm trying to compile a list of short phrases or terms that apply to gaming, in general. Terms that probably any gamer of any genre would perhaps know. Terms like.. 1up, fragged, ding, instagib, etc.

If you can think of any, I'd appreciate it.

eh, nah those are all really specific. i'm trying to come up with something to use as a name and url for my gaming news/interviews site. so, maphack or aimbot wouldn't really work as-is. i really like 1up.com's name, so i was trying to think of something that sort of follows that name scheme.

i've posted this on the WoW forums also, and surprisngly a lot of younger people havent' ever heard of fragged or insta-gib. damn, kids!

Leveling? Wasn't used in D2.  I think you are stuck in WoW land.

fragged

killed? would still be awkward outside of a FPS

ding

wtf?  I only know this because of the WoW people on this forum.

A lot of this seems like WoW baggage.

1up? no, it has been around for a long time. even used in mario when you got an extra life - getting a mushroom said '1 up', or they were called "1 up"s, or something, if i recall. it's a general term from that time meaning that you just got an extra life. pretty much all old console games used this. no, it doesn't pertain to leveling, really.

fragged is an fps term, yes. and yes is means to have gotten a kill.

ding is from MMOs, yes. heavily used in wow, again you're correct.

insta-gib, or gibbing in general, was used heavily when i played Quake and UT. instagib means like 1 shot kill.

i guess some people don't know the 'old school' gaming terms. heh. jesus, i know these aren't used every day in every game, but if you haven't heard of these... what did you play? sounds like you've got some bad blood with WoW - hope it didn't ruin your life too much.

I hate WoW!

You just want a cool domain name, that's it?

well, yea, but that sounds like no fun! i was just looking for possible terms that were created, or coined by gaming scenes. terms that were even just heavily used by games. terms that span gaming generations - obviously fragged, gibbed and 1up are terms that do this, yet some people just haven't heard of them since they're older and not really used in current games. :P

camping/camper is a good one.

So are spawnkill/spawncamping and dupe!

and as far as I know... insta-gib means your corpse exploded you got killed so badly. 1shot/1shotted would be you got killed in one hot.

well, instagib was a game-type on quake, or doom. cant remember which one. but it was just a 1 shot == kill, game type. was pretty fun. it kind of became the term used for an instant kill, after that. not so much anymore, though. i think it sort of died with counter-strike.
