I have no idea [nor do I care much] what the software was.. Anything actually useful?

I found one of them useful.  It basically does something that I've set Ubuntu up to do: press some keys, select a portion of the screen, take a screenshot, put it on the web, copy the URL to your clipboard.  It's (obviously) very useful, but it's slightly amusing to me that the software costs money.  With Ubuntu, I had it setup with Compiz, a perl script, and Dropbox.

Shovebox looks sort of interesting, and I might try it out, but the rest of it doesn't interest me.  The word processor might, but I think that it's not a good idea to be unequipped with something compatible with office these days.
