whoa. I figured it meant shit (just like a VIN does on a car). but seeing it all spelled out. I guess it's less complicated than a car's though? I dunno...thought it was cool so I posted.
Two jobs ago, I actually wrote a program to parse out credit card numbers so we could do statistics on stolen credit cards we came across. Which bank is the most affected, which credit card company, which country, stuff like that. It was pretty neat. :)
I assumed it worked like this since some online retailers/ e-commerce systems don't require you to input the type of card it is (VISA, MC, etc.)... playing around with different inputs will at least get you the information about which type of card starts with what numbers, VISA being the easiest.

I don't remember. The results were in Symantec's ISTR (Internet Security Threat Report), though. I think the 2007 one.
