Title: AdvancedContent CMS Version 2.0
Post by: Warrior on July 06, 2005, 07:18:16 AM
I decided to restructure Advanced Content and came out with AdvancedContent v2.0.

The Module thinking has been  completely recoded and no longer are able to crash the core, they are restricted to thier own function sets and are not permitted to access anything else.

I have written several Modules including a Download Module, Member List, Group Module, etc..

The core has been revamped and now error handles each module and has module functions which are registerable.

The only thing left to do in this CMS is rewrite the Template Engine to bring it up to par with the one of Digital Text Forums

Todo:
The Template Engine
Finish Some Modules
Implement my servicing theory
Port Digital Text Forums to a Module.

As always the site is here: www.advancedcontent.net

Announcements on 2.1 have been made!(A while ago..)

This project has merged with the former Digital Text Forum (Now known as DTBB)
The old project may be checked out at (www.advancedcontent.net/DTF)

As this project gets bigger I will be needing other developers to aid with the creation.
Anyone who is interested can PM me or Reply here with:

Name:
Skill Level: (1-5)
Examples of Previous Work:
How you can contribute:
Other Things I should know:

Note: I am not only looking for pure programming developers, I need people to head the graphics department and anything else anyone can think of.

In the coming days I will either be buying whats needed to fix my comp and get online or just seriously live in the library with an external HD.

I'm getting my internet back October 11th, now if I have a working comp by then is the question..

I have redesigned how everything will work in my notebook/grandmothers comp.

I will be trying to get to the bottom of the problem with my computer soon.

I'm interested, I know php3 and lots of 4, I know SQL.  Previous works have been shot, several times.  I lack the ability to create nice looking themes, but I know how to do the behind the scenes work (the real coding). :)

Joe seems to be an upcoming developer and can be put to use with AdvancedContent
Blaze can contribute to AdvancedContent from the previous work I have seen him do.

I am right now creating an FTP account and mySQL database to setup a beta website while the regular one is rendered under construction.

Both of you will be PMed the information for the beta FTP and I will upload the phpMyAdmin information tomorrow.

Coding style and rules will be included in this PM.

That was one of the reasons I didn't "apply for a possition."

A little bit of that, some of I don't like having a boss for programming jobs (at this point in my life, anyway) and some of you'd force me to code your way, and I think it sucks (not trying to be mean at all, I just like my methods more than yours personally).
Title: Re: AdvancedContent CMS Version 2.0
Post by: Warrior on October 01, 2005, 12:07:49 PM
Not coding my way actually, it's more uniform way of leaving quotes to let everyone else know where they are.

My methods > yours :/ :)

I don't think of myself as a boss in any way either, although I do reserve the position of Lead Developer, I'm not going to force anyone to do anything.

About my online question, I ordered my ram to get here tuesday and I will be online after October 11th so everything is good.

Edit: The main site was brought down for maintenence by me yesterday and moved to a development location.

I have some cool things in store for AdvancedContent but that will be discussed between the developers and myself.

Uh Quotes? I meant comments, oops.

I'd say it's hard to judge me withought seeing code I am not willing to give forward to non developer.
Let's just give me the benefit of the doubt.

About the Lead Developer, what do you propose I'd be? I mean I have coded it myself so far..

In x86 or in AdvancedContent? In any of them I have been extremely active, the push from
1.1 to 2.0 was a great one which involved almost a complete rewrite and change in direction.
I plan to build off the power of 2.0 to make 2.1 which will be presentable and releaseable and I plan to
do so before the years end.

I think I show my determination pretty well if I program on my CMS in the library two or three times a day and if I jot down things in my notebook. My coding style really doesn't differ and it's how it's recommended in all of the PHP books I have read. Which includes camel case and other things.

The only thing I am lacking is extreme HTML skills which I make up for my spending dark nights with w3c and XHTML.

If you have anymore questions about the direction of my project or anything else concerning it, please respond.

Look over my messages and find where I said you shouldn't be the lead developer.  I simply stated I didn't want to "work under you" (or at lest implied that).  I honestly don't think that would work very well.

Camel case isn't recommended for PHP in any of the PHP books I've read, to be honest.  Additionally, I don't give a shit about the casing, that's a negligible issue.  I've developed my own coding style, I don't follow what books recommend.  Frankly I think it's better than what most the books I've read recommend, other than the fact I don't use a template engine in most of my projects.

Well you said you didn't want to work under me so you must not want me to be lead developer, right?
That's why I asked for recommendation on what you think I should be, additionally no one was begging anyone to join and the enviroment I was going for was a group of programmers coding on a project.
Now I made myself Lead Developer since frankly I did write the CMS and don't wan't it to fall off track and have no organization. Sort of like how Newby is the figurehead of x86. I merely suggest things to code and ask for an opinion.

It's in a few of the books I read and some online documents. It's greatly liked as opposed to the
"function_name_which_does_this" type of coding.

QuoteI don't use a template engine in most of my projects.
In a project such as this which aims for flexibility, something like this is essential don't you think?

Why?  I generally tend to follow the naming conventions that the language itself follows.  PHP does not use camel casing.  It's greatly liked by whom?  You?  The authors of the books you've read?  Whoopdy doo!  I don't like it, don't generalize.

Haha I coded the Outbox code in the library. Go me.

Well part of it, I still need to code reading individuals and then start on trash can folder :P

Edit: Outbox done.
Changelog posted @ Beta site for developers so devs check that out.

The PM code was cleaned up GREATLY by me in about 2 hours time.
Outbox now fully works except the ability to permanently remove them from the outbox.

Over the next few days other options such as deleting PMs and forwarding PMs will become availible.

That doesn't seem that significant assuming you've made your template system versatile.

If you ask me, you're jumping around to much.  Write down a list of things that need to be done for some section, do them and then move on.  Things get too sloppy if you don't do it that way.

How can it communicate with the skinning system withought supporting the Skinning API? After all I don't want a mediocre "str_replace()" skinning system.

Well, I code things in thier order of significance. Sometimes things come in front or things can be done earlier to avoid problems in the long run.

Well, I code things in thier order of significance. Sometimes things come in front or things can be done earlier to avoid problems in the long run.
It causes trouble in the long run.  You forget where you were and end up having to review code, it often gets confusing and you lose the good train of thought you had before you dropped that subject.

Considering the amount of code embedded into the PM code, it may get difficult to convert it to the Skin API and have it automaticly find it's themeing files. Of course, you'll have to take my word for it since you can't see the source.

I don't leave code half done, I merely extend it which eliminates the risk of me being lost in old code. Of course periodicly I may update old portions of code to newer standards but that's nothing big.

I still don't think it would be that difficult, assuming you didn't suck it up too much when you made your PM system and your template system isn't difficult (you seem to be good at making things a lot harder than they should be).

Secondly, that's just another way of looking at leaving things half done.  :P

Fixed the mess you made. Added ability to create topics. No replying yet but it's a start.

Note: This new code is VERY beta and may be riddled with bugs. I have (for now) embedded an error reporter to the user if anything goes wrong. If you notice anything, please let me know.

Have fun,
Nelson

I have been able to find the source of a bug.

It had to do with the name being too long in any field. I will fix that so it errors and deletes anything that was created so far.

I forgot my password again /emotear.

EDIT -
Bingo batman! Using my leet PHP hashing oneliner, I created myself a new md5 password. Using my leet phpMyAdmin skills, I injected my new password!

Keep up the good work guys!

You realize SQL has a MD5 function, don't you?

  INSERT INTO users (
    `name`,
    `password`
  ) VALUES (
    'Joesuxlol^_^',
    MD5('mmhax')
  );

AdvancedContent seems to be down now so I'll implement replying tomorrow.

Under implementation

Groups:
Groups is a new concept in AdvancedContent. The way commands, pages, and even forums are handled will be based on groups which will have permissions. Flags will be able to be created and commands will be allowed either by specific group or by a general flag.
Groups will also effect who can view what boards on the forums and who can do what basicly anywhere on the website. It will take a bunch of rewritting but after this is done, AdvancedContent will be almost completely ready for atleast a beta release.

Modules:
Modules in AdvancedContent will be as powerful as they were before and will allow the user to load/unload his module as he wishes.

Buddy List:
Users will be able to keep a "buddy list" of users and it will mark them as online/offline
This will also introduce the ability for a user to remain "hidden" to the website.

Searching:
Searching will be implemented via a "meta data" indexer which will store information on everything from news posts to user comments and will allow speedy searching with little overhead.

Pages:
Pages will be implemented (with a WYSIWYG previewer) and will implement the Groups permissions if needed

New User things:
Users will be able to block users from sending them private messages
They will also be able to choose a skin they want to display, not just what the site displays (toggleable)
Favorite Links - A stored list of useful links throught the site they like, things like forum topics, individual posts, etc..

This of course will take heavy implementation but I am confident with my current motivation I can implement it all.

A VERY serious exploit has been discovered. Can't give details since the results can be...devestating to both the site and the DB

KEK.

PS: I think AC CMS should have a product support board instead of a single thread.

Eventually I will move to using our integrated forums once I add other features (like moderation of boards) and fix the current issues with security.

For a detailed description of the exploit you may PM me. Thanks go out to Shadowed for providing a solution which is currently being implemented.

Once again, that's an incorrect link. Try going to the Development website (http://www.advancedcontent.net/ac_dev) and clicking the forum link. If this doesn't work there is something seriously wrong with your browser.

Does anyone (mainly Sidoh and possibly others) have any comments on Smarty? (http://smarty.php.net). It's a PHP template engine which IMHO is MUCH more flexible the mine will ever be. I think it might be a good idea that while I'm upgrading AdvancedContent's security, I switch to this. Any comments?
Title: Re: AdvancedContent CMS Version 2.0
Post by: Quik on October 25, 2005, 10:28:36 PM
Smarty has some issues and requires much more on the end user's behalf then should actually be necessary, but if you feel that having an effectively flexible template engine is more important than a diverse userbase, it's more tailored towards your needs.

I don't know much about the security, you should probably look some of that up before implementing it, since that seems to be a large concern of yours.
Title: Re: AdvancedContent CMS Version 2.0
Post by: Warrior on October 25, 2005, 10:34:03 PM
From reading some of the documentation, it requires the user to have knowledge of the set variables they are implemented and how each page works (which I plan to document). Not every user has to develop a skin, cmon. ;)

I don't think "security" matters since it's not a matter of security in something like a template engine. It's just a presentation layer that users will see. I don't want developers to have to touch a line of PHP code if they use it.

Update! Made some updates (mainly HTML patches in some places) but I fixed a nasty bug in my logon code (hey it's ~5 months old give me a break) which allowed a user to take any Admin account.

The "big" bug still hasn't been fixed since the security checks required to fix it mean I need to go through all my old code and implement it.

I'm just fixing these small errors while I code 2.1 to fix the big exploit and to incorperate a whole new means of thinking into AdvancedContent.

Enjoy.
