There's nothing wrong with being a hacker, especially if you're a whitehat.

Unless we're using the publicly misconceived definition of "hacker", but I'm sure we're all too smart for that.

I was being sarcastic about the 'you're a hacker if you use it'. anyways, I sure hope we aren't using the publicly misconceived definition of a hacker. A hacker is someone who breaks into computers. There are no hacker ethics.

No, a hacker isn't somebody who breaks into computers.  That's the misconceived definition.  You're talking about a cracker :-P

Shoulda known you woulda replied with that. But you're wrong...
hackers have broken into systems. Always have and always will. your idea of hackers have been formed by the sec industry. a hacker is someone who hacks into computers. do not tell me that when you first decided you'd become a hacker that you wanted to be a whitehat, iago. don't tell me you never wanted to break into a server. that is what a hacker was original, and that is what it always will be. a cracker is someone who 'breaks into software'. there's a line that separates hackers from crackers. I know you'll say that breaking into software is breaking into a system, yes... but that is what hackers do. let me explain. crackers are the people that will go and download the trial version of some shareware product, and crack the software in order to get rid of the time limit, for instance. a hacker will find ways to exploit software in order to gain certain privileges, like root. hackers gain access to systems with THEIR OWN CODE (0day code), crackers gain a lifetime of warez because they can pirate stuff on their own ;).

No, I'm afraid you're incorrect.  Yet again, you're using the words the way commoners use "virus" to mean "trojan or worm or anything".  Just because it's commonly used that way by non-security people, doesn't mean it's right.

And no, I never wanted to break into systems, ever.

Why does every thread become a Whitehat vs Blackhat conversation :/
And you're not a hacker just by using *nix. For example, Linspire users are rarely hackers. (Other than a good looking GUI and easy of use, it's garbage).

Oh here's my definition list:
Cracker - White person.
Hacker - Person who cuts wood.
Whitehat - A hat with white paint pigment.
Blackhat - A hat with black paint pigment.

Nope. The instant you begin to use Linux, you're an elite hacker, regardless if you just instantly came from Windows.

Am I now? From your definition of hacker: "A hacker is someone who breaks into computers." I can't break into any of the computer on my network even if I tried (at the present moment, not using references). So please tell me how you become an "elite hacker" just by using Linux?

Linspire doesn't inspire people to even know what a terminal is.

I am way too lazy to sit around and read everyone's posts to create a huge debate, however I use Linux for my Webhosting company.

The simple fact is that Linux > Windows because actually doesn't crash every time you try and load it. Linux and Unix both are stable and safer in the sense that they are opensource and more people can correct the problems that they incounter. Windows simply allows you to have a dead "OS" until the release a patch or update for it.

The experience matters not, young grasshopper. What matters is this: OpenVMS (not Unix btw, but a really elite and cool OS... pretty secure too (although it's a pain to use, because it's pretty advanced -- more advanced than *BSD or Linux, or other OS's like Solaris or Tru64 and HP-UX, etc, etc, etc... ) > *BSD > Linux > Windows
It is the truth. Not many people know about OpenVMS anymore, though. Let alone VAX systems.

Yes that is true, I guess that it really depends. In the end the question boils down to, Is it the User or the OS?

To this I can not reply too. I have never herd of OpenVMS, although I have restrictions on what OS I install on my servers as the Control Panels that I install have a lot of compatibility issues.

Take cPanel for example. For awhile cpanel worked only on FC1 and FC2 and not FC3.
