Title: Flying!
Post by: Sidoh on August 09, 2005, 03:31:07 PM
On Earth, is it possible to travel 30 miles due south, 30 miles due west, 30 miles due north and end up right where you started? If so, where do you start?

You go in a triangle. I don't want to draw.

Solve the rest of the question though.

There are infinite other ways to do it.

Yes, you start at either of Earth's poles.

That's not infinite, it's two.

Besides, either of them wouldn't work. It has to be the North Pole. You can't go any further south if you're at the south pole. It's a physical impossibility.

As long as the compass is pointing to north and you head in the S direction, you're going south.

The south pole is the ultimate destination of the direction south. Once you're there, you can't go south any further. It's the end of a line, so to speak.

Omg that drawing sucks, do it again.

Lol, just kidding. Nice work both of you.

Like I said -- there are ininite solutions. Come up with the other... infinity! :D

Ok!

1. Load in photoshop
2. Press "rotate"
3. Select a random value
4. Repeat infinity times

There's another way to do it though. :)

Well, you didn't say what order, so start at the south pole and start by going north :)

No, there's another way to do it (asside from the triangle method that both you and Ergot mentioned) given the same set of instructions.

15s -> 15w -> 15s -> 15w -> 30n !

Oh, stupid me!

Start 30mi north of the South Pole

<edit> Can you go west from the South Pole? You'd just be going in circles :-o

I guess you could go far enough north that west would take you in a complete circle after going 30km south.  So it would look like:
