Title: Wow @ my union
Post by: iago on September 27, 2005, 11:58:32 AM
I mark assignments at school; as such, I'm in their union.  I just got this email from them:

QuoteCUPE 3909 is having a beginning of the year social event on Wednesday, October 5th, at 5:30pm. There will be free veagan friendly food from the Daily Bread Cafe, beer, wine, and non-alcholic beverages. We are also proud to present music from the 1919 Insurrectionary Orchestra, an acoustic duo who play grass roots revolutionary folk songs. There is no admission and members can bring a friend.

Veagan food? Grass roots revolutionary folk songs? Jesus...

I wish I could come, if only to throw veagan food at the orchestra and to finally have a good opportunity to wear my maddox shirt: http://store.theworstpageintheuniverse.com/shirts.html#EVERYANIMAL

No, grading papers for professors.  All papers are graded by students here, it's a rule or something.  Who cares, I get $100/week for marking dumbasses who don't know C :)

If you were hosting a "social event" (party), would you only serve vegean food? Personally, and I realize that you don't have "socials" in the rest of the world, but my favorite parts of "socials" is the free "social food".  Namely, bread, sandwich meat, cheese cubes, and pickles.  However, at a vegean-friendly one, it seems like I'd be eating pickles and bread.  Boo :(

When I have parties and crap, I don't get meat food... So in a sense yes. If nobody finishes it, it goes to waste, and my mom like kills if we waste food.

I don't have to worry about social events, I'm way too cool to be invited to a party.

A "Social" isn't really a "party".  I guess they're similar, but a "social" is bigger.  Typically, for a "social", they sell ticket for $5 or $10 to everybody they can.  A lot of people buy them without intending to go, just to help support them.  They have "social food" (usually sandwich meat, bread, pickles, cheese cubes, and little desserts) which is typically donated.  They have a Silent Auction, where people buy tickets and put them in for each prize, then the prizes are drawn for.  The prizes are also typically donated.  Other than that, there's usually music, and dancing, and other boring stuff.

The whole "Social" is designed as a fund raiser.  Usually, they are for people who are planning on getting married, to help pay for the wedding.  They're a great idea, but for some reason, only people in Winnipeg do them.
