Title: X Troubles
Post by: Warrior on October 23, 2005, 09:01:38 PM
Specs:
   Processor: AMD Duron 1.4GHz
   Ram: DDR 266 256MB
   Slackware: 10.1 10GB Partition (ext2 FS)
Video: S3 ProDDR Savage or ATi Radeon 7000 64MB AGP

Now when I type in "startx" or "xinit" I simply get a black screen.

Could this be due to a bad installation? The disk is pretty old but I've tried to reinstall numerous times.

Any ideas?

One question: which distro?

I'm not sure what's wrong.  But try this:

When you get the black screen, hit control-alt-backspace.  That should kill X.  Then check /var/log/Xorg*.log.  Or, if it's Xfree, its log files should still be in that folder.  Looking through them might give you a clue.

Also check /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or xf86.conf or whatever it's called).  See if there's anything odd.

<edit> If all else fails, there's a Wiki on X's site that is for tech support, or something.  Or www.linuxquestions.org, they know a lot more than us.  Or irc.prison.net #linuxhelp.

I was having this problem yesterday too. What I ended up doing is

su
cd /etc/X11
rm xorg.conf
rm XF86-*
dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

But you don't have Debian Packages (I suppose) so the last line won't apply/work for you. Basically, reconfigure your X server. xorgconfig or xorgconf in Slackware.

Rebooting into slack
Going to try and see if I can get a log, thanks.

I think it completely hangs. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work. I've tried xorgconfig about 5 times already. :/

Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

Well once I got "could not find monitor" or something, else I simply had to restart. Note: that previous error exited immediately, didn't hang.

Ctrl+F2. startx
Ctrl+F1. Read output.

Yeah, I obvoiusly didn't see that.  I just skimmed over the specs, because I don't care about them :-P

And yeah, logs would be handy.

Well when I try to have it run on bare vesa I get:
Unable to use framebuffer please specify busID

and when I try to use the Radeon sometimes I get:
no screen found

other times it just hangs and I can't switch consoles or stop the task or anything.

Post the Graphics and Monitor section of your xorg.conf. As well as any errors from your Xorg.0.log

I will as soon as I figure out how Links works. It doesn't seem to like saving sessions across pages (WTF!)
Can I mount my windows drive and save it as a textfile on there then unmount? Or are mounts read only?

Links should be able to save sessions... I've used it to post on here before I think.
Yes, you can mount your Windows drive and save it.

I don't believe NTFS can be mounted readwrite yet.

From what I remember, it can.

You're right, NTFS is only read. But I have my drive formatted as FAT32 (Win98)

NTFS's write support is very weak right now.  But apparently it doesn't matter!

If you're using a Radeon card, you might have luck if you install the FGLRX package.  That stands for FireGL something, and is ATI's drivers.

You can download it from www.linuxpackages.net.  The only package they have is for Slackware 10.1, but it should work on any version.

It supports the following cards:
         - ATI FireGL V3100 / V3200 / V5000 / V5100 / V7100
         - ATI FireGL X1 / X2 / X3 / Z1 / T2
         - ATI FireGL 8700 / 8800
         - ATI Mobility FireGL T2 / 9100 / V5000
         - ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 / 9200 / 9600 /9800
         - ATI Mobility Radeon X700
         - ATI Radeon 8500 / 9000 / 9100 / 9200
         - ATI Radeon 9500 / 9550 / 9600 / 9700 / 9800
         - ATI Radeon X300 / X600 / X700 / X800 / X850
         - ATI IGP Radeon 9100 / 9200/n  - ATI IGP Mobility Radeon 9000 / 9100/n

To install it:

$ wget http://ftp.scarlet.be/pub/linuxpackages/Slackware-10.1/Library/ati-fglrx/ati-fglrx-8.16.20-i386-1tsu.tgz
# installpkg ati-fglrx-8.16.20-i386-1tsu.tgz

That should download and install it.  After installation, it automatically goes through the configuration (which you can access again by running fglrxconfig).

Hopefully your card is on the supported list there, because if not I just wasted a bunch of time :)

And........ it's not.  Damnit.  Well, try that anyway, it can't hurt :P

Now post that where you can find some experts.

www.linuxquestions.org should help :)

I don't believe NTFS can be mounted readwrite yet.

Wrong-o captain. It's been able to write for quite some time.

It just can't create or remove bytes.

I hear the writing is pretty bad and overall it's unstable. NTFS is a complex FS.

I see: (EE) Unable to locate/open config file

Should be: (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Do you have that file o_O ? Doesn't xorgconfig write to current directory? You might wanted to move it to there.

Yea I rm'ed xorg.conf, but it should default to xorg.conf-vesa which should work since I can run VESA 2.0 and (afaik) VBE3

Hmm, Specify a BusID then ;O ? I don't know how to get the right numbers though... I usually let the config file do it.

It's not so much that it's complex, there are a lot of complex FS's that Linux can read/write.  It's that it's undocumented, so it's 100% guess work.  The people who have been working on the project do it by making small changes and seeing what is different.  I don't think anybody has tried to reverse engineer the drivers yet, to my knowledge; could be a fun project :)

Or maybe they DO reverse engineer, but aren't allowed to say they do.

There is SOME light documentation but yes, I'd estimate most of it is guess work. And that's what it mean't.

Man, I suck @ this.
