It's a fact that New Year's day is exactly 7 days after Christmas. However, in 1939, the year of the outbreak of World War II, Christmas fell on a Monday and New Year's fell on a Sunday. Why?
Is it something to do with the national date line? :\
Nope.
Because New Years is January 1st, not December 32nd.
(New Years: 1/1/1939
Christmas: 12/25/1939)
26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, [1]
Ta-da :/ 7 days after not including :).

I think you might know the answer, but can you explain it better?

New Years was still 7 days after Christmas, only it was 1/1/1940. Since the riddle pertains to 1939, the date thing was able to happen since New Years was on 1/1/1939. The question is trying to trick you into counting ahead (and giving you December 32nd, which doesn't exist) instead of thinking about New Years occuring at the beginning of the year.
Ok, yeah, you have it.
New Years isn't' 7 days after christmas, it's about 358 (on non-leap years) days before it :)
