I realize that... I just thought I'd point out something I tried when I found out they bowed to censorship in China. :P

Its actually returning different results for most everything. Try "grass" for example in the image search. I also fail to see anything even remotely funny about it.

I do. Grass returns different results? Why would China censor grass? lol!

Yeah, that's real terrible. I mean, damn them for having to make a living.

I am glad they did this. That just means Google can support themselves for longer.

I don't get what is so terrible about this.

Is it censored, or just different?

Could be just a different index / priority. :P

It turns out that this problem was due to case-sensitivity:

I'm also sure that you would have gotten better results if you had entered your query in Chinese.  It's like searching for "antidisestablishment" on a German site.

True, but it's the name of a place, not a world.

Also, try:
http://images.google.cn/images?q=tiananmeN
http://images.google.cn/images?q=tiAnanmen
http://images.google.cn/images?q=tiaNANmen

Apparently Google's filter is case sensitive.  Oops :)

Because I used just the basic query.  The one you gave had all sorts of other fancy things in the URL.

I like using Linux, yes.  And, in general, I like case sensitivity, but not when case sensitivity allows you to get around filters.  If part of it is case sensitive, then all of it should be.

Besides, Google promises that all searches are "NOT case sensitive" (http://www.google.com/help/basics.html).

Obviously its image search engine abides by different rules...
Title: Re: Compare and Contrast: Chinese

It's much more likely that they screwed up their filter, and they filter BEFORE they convert toLower() and not after.

The main reason is that Google filtering stuff in China is big news.
