Title: Workout music
Post by: iago on April 07, 2006, 09:52:03 PM
My stepdad wants me to make him a CD of workout music.  Anybody have suggestions of music with good beat/energy?  Specific artists or songs would be best.  Something that a 40+ person would listen to.

His first suggestions -- Life is a HIghway.

Any ideas?

Jeff Deyo - Lose Myself
Metallica - The Call of Ktulu
Deliverance - J.I.G.
Deliverance - Purgatory Sandwich With Mustard (unless your dad is catholic!)
Hillsong - Better Is One Day
The Insyderz - Shout To The Lord

Lose Myself isn't all that heavy of a beat, but J.I.G will provide an intense workout. Better is One Day would be a stretch / cool down, I think.

Unearth - The Great Dividers.  There's a point where it picks up; if you're working out, I think it would really help you get moving (if you're into that kind of music, which I know you are).

Cool, I'll check it out.  Here are other songs I've been thinking of:

Life is a Highway
Summer of '69
Believe (gotta have some Cher!)
Enter Sandman
Worlds Collide
Dragula
Toxic Waltz

Any sort of non-lyrical techno would be good for workouts.

I don't think he likes techno.  He wants more like something he can listen to and enjoy.

Another good Powerman 5000 workout song is When Worlds Collide.  You could always use Immigrant Song too.....

Eye of the Tiger and AC/DC are good calls.

I already put When Worlds Collide on my list.

And no, I'm not making my stepdad listen to "Fuck!...I'm Dead" :P

Heh, missed the part (initially) where it was for your stepdad.  You mean you didn't listen to it before you put it on?  I would've thought you'd heart hat song before anyway. ;)

Judging by that list, he might like Jethro Tull. My dad loves them, and they rock pretty hard. JAZZ FLUTE SOLO!!

Well, it was sort of a demo cd.  Pretty much, "Which of these song styles do you like?" to give me a better idea.  For like $.10/cd, I'm not worried about throwing one out.  I threw a second one out, too, when my laptop's battery died.  Oops :)

I'm sure I've heard the song, but I didn't specifically remember.

I'm guessing the screenwriters of American Pie do not fall into the "correctly" category?

Blue Man Group and The Chemical Brothers should suit your father's needs quite well.

Hah. I forgot Cryptic Slaughter. Fack.

I was kidding about the bands. Hitmen recommended Fuck I'm Dead, so I contributed the same way. :D

Like you should tar+gzip those songs and email them to razorm@gmail.com iago! I have to put together a presentation with a target audience in the same age group.

AFAIK the best compression on mp3 files is rar. gzip and bzip2 fail to compare to how much space you can save. (the half a megabyte that is)

Just use Limewire.  I found them all with ease.

By design, MP3's already have really high ... bah, what's that word for randomness?  Entropy?  Something like that.  Anyway, they don't have very many patterns to exploit so compression won't do much at all to them.

So? You can still shave off half a meg or so. :)

For the sake of iago I was going with something Linux natively supports. Wouldn't want him to have to go out of his way but if he won't send me the music anyways bleh @ him! :(

If you wanted to go all out, you could reencode all of the mp3s in a variable bitrate format that supports higher compression :-P

Uhh, winRAR works on Linux.

rar a -r -m5 forzorm.rar ./path/to/mp3s

Thats something Linux distros normally ship with? Cause on the winRAR site is says its not free... so yeah I doubt iago is using winRAR.

Linux doesn't natively support any file compression.  however gzip, bzip2, and infozip (which uses .zip format) generally ship by default.  You shouldn't mix those up! :P

Erm, I was thinking correctly but only stated it correctly in my previous post when mentions linux, distros and shipping normally.

You didn't say ships with, you said "natively supports".

You lose.
