Title: Pickled Jamaican, anybody?
Post by: iago on May 07, 2006, 09:20:41 AM
They were talking about this at work, so I had to go out and find the story:

Quote

Hungarian builders who drank their way to the bottom of a huge barrel of rum while renovating a house got a nasty surprise when a pickled corpse tumbled out of the empty barrel, a police magazine Web site reported.

According to online magazine www.zsaru.hu, workers in Szeged in the south of Hungary tried to move the barrel after they had drained it, only to find it was surprisingly heavy and were shocked when the body of a naked man fell out.

The Web site said that the body of the man had been shipped back from Jamaica 20 years ago by his wife in the barrel of rum in order to avoid the cost and paperwork of an official return.

That would just be the most horrible thing ever!

I think he meant drinking from a barrel with a dead guy in it.

I guess to look at the bright side, the alcohol would have killed any bacteria and stuff.

Yeah but not AIDS.

I'm pretty sure they're safe from AIDS.  I don't think AIDS could survive outside of a living body for long, nevermind in a hostile environment (alcohol).  Plus, you don't typically (easily) get AIDS orally.

I'm pretty sure virii that do not have a host simply go dormant (one of the reasons it's debated whether they're considered living organisms) and reactivate when a new host body is found.

At least, I'm positive I've read that somewhere, although I'm not sure it's true.

It's true for some, not for others.  A sign AIDS can't live long outside a host is that it requires bodily fluid transmission to spread.

I know that some virii can survive under the right conditions (frozen is a good example, but probably in other places).  But I'm not certain that they would survive in alcohol.  Alcohol is often used to steralize, and I know it kills bacteria and other microorganisms for sure.  I suspect it kills virii too, but maybe not.

AIDS for sure doesn't survive outside the human body for a long time.  That's why it's nearly impossible to get AIDS from, say, a toilet seat.

I think that bacteria is probably the bigger concern when a dead body is involved, though.

And yeah, the problem is that they were probably drinking his poop and stuff.  However, from being in alcohol so long, it wouldn't be unhealthy, just gross.

From a medical perspective, I doubt there's a problem.  But yeah, still gross :P

This is sort of off topic, but it's too funny to not mention.

This semester in College Composition II, we were assigned a 30 page research paper to construe.  My friend finally decided his topic of choice a few weeks ago (several months into the assingment).   Ready for it?  Here it is: canibalism.

Ah, that's a fantastic topic.  It's yet another of those things that we find disgusting for no real reason besides that we always have.

Hehe, yes.  Logically, canibalism has no wrong.

Moral issues arrise when this subject is referenced, though: "OH MY GOD YOU JUST ATE MY GRANDPA YOU JERK!"

I agree, though.  It's kind of like washing your hands after you pee, right? :P  I told one of my teachers about your revelation at the urinal (1/3 people don't wash their hands after standing here).  He thought that was hillarious.  :P

I noticed that the other day at work, it was actually a member of management that didn't wash his hands, kind of dissapointed me.

iago's revelation was this:

"If I don't wash my hands, the chance that the people who prepare my food will goes up."

Well, I saw a sign that said "1/3 of people who stand here won't wash their hands".  So, logically, if I don't then the odds that the people who cook my food will goes up.

But I don't really think cannibalism is like washing hands, though, since failing to wash hands can be directly harmful (well, not quite directly, but eh?).  I think it's more like homosexuality and child pornography: cultural taboos.

Those are better analogies, but I think the specific nature of mine makes it work. ;)
