Yay Seagate! They released a perpendicular magnetic drive, 750gb internal, for $590. First PM drive, too! I sooo want 10.
What's perpendicular magnetic?

Basically, standard harddrives' magnets lie flat on the platters, taking up lots of space (ie: parallel). Perpendicular drives have their magnets aligned vertically (perpendicular to the platters), which allows much more densely packed platters, and, vis-a-vis, more storage space.
That's an easy one.
Current hard disk technology with longitudinal recording has an estimated limit of 100 to 200 gigabit per square inch due to the Superparamagnetic effect, though this estimate is constantly changing. Perpendicular recording is predicted to allow information densities of up to around 1 Tbit/sq. inch (1000 Gbit/sq. inch).
1 terabit = 1012 bits = 1,000,000,000,000 bits (one trillion, long scale: one billion)
:D
Ok, I give.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpendicular_recording
Wasn't that a week or two ago? I remember hearing about the 750gb drive.
The race is on down the home stretch to get to 1tb!
Shh. I didn't see it here and just read it :X
And here I am, unable to fill even a measly 80gb HD.

There's another one of those I like better :P

I've known about this since before I left for my dad's house. Heh.

Yeah, the talks have been out for a
long time...
