Title: Microsoft Aquires Sysinternals

That upsets me.  Sysinternals was a great company, but I doubt they'll keep producing their useful tools now.

They say that the site will remain up "for the time being" -- so you might want to go download your favorite sysinternals.net tools and keep them in a safe place.

God damnit. This sucks. :/

Pretty soon, they'll drink the mind soup, have the chip inserted in their brain, and we'll have to have WGA installed to get TCPView and Rootkit Revealer... :/

They probably want the code for Process Explorer to replace the current task manager. Apparently procexp is a popular tool inside M$...

I wouldn't be looking forward to working for the machine if I were them. They don't pay very well. Hell, the only real benefit I see is the health insurance (they'll pay for anything) and the company store.

Hopefully they will improve Vista and other things. :P

For anybody who's interested, here is a 'copy' of the FAQ from winternal's site (http://www.winternals.com/Faq.aspx):

Q. What are you announcing?

Resistance is futile.

Q. How does this acquisition affect Winternals' customers?

Cost is going up, delivery is going to suck.

Q. Will you continue selling Winternals' portfolio of products?

There is no such thing anymore.

Q. Why is it a good thing for Winternals' customers?

These aren't the droids you're looking for.

Q. Will I still receive technical support and if so for how long?

How long can you tread water?

Q. Why is Microsoft acquiring Winternals and Sysinternals?

To assimilate.

Q. What exactly is a Technical Fellow?

Microsoft Bob.

Q. How many Technical Fellows are there at Microsoft?

There can be only one.

Q. My Product Assurance Contract with Winternals on Administrator's Pak (or other tool) is about to expire (or has just expired). Can I still renew it?

You're new around here, aren't you?

Q. What were the terms? How much did Microsoft pay for Winternals? Was it a cash or stock deal?

A few spare souls that have not been allocated yet.

All told, this doesn't particularly surprise me.  The guy who does Sysinternals wrote the Windows Internals book for Microsoft Press.  I knew it was coming eventually.

Very disappointing, I use their tools heavily.  I'll have to download all of them quickly before Microsoft starts charging for the same thing under new names.

Incidently, their site was down yesterday when I tried to access it :/

I grabbed all the tools off SysInternals' site, and the description pages. I'll make posts with the descriptions, and anyone who wants the tools can talk to me.

HOLY FUCKING HELL HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Anyways, this does suck majorly.  SysInternals is one of the best tool-maker I've seen. :\

I have that book in my living room. :)

It's one of the best books on Windows.  You should read it while you're here.

Heh. Apparently they aren't gonna start charging for the tools because the tools are already in the public domain for free.

That's not the microsoft way, though!  They'll make "upgrades" to the product, crippling them badly and then release a "professional" version for several hundred dollars.

To the topic, I believe Anakin Skywalker said it best, "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Hah, I'm not surprised they got Slashdotted. Everybody is crawling it.  It'll be easy++ to find the tools now if the site gets shut down, so I'm happy. :)

I don't think MS would shut it down personally, I more agree with the integration into Vista part. Is it confirmed they're shutting the site down? That's pretty silly of MS.

They didn't say one way or the other.  The SysInternals guy said that it'll remain up "for the time being", which doesn't bode well but also doesn't confirm anything.
