Microsoft announced that its MP3 player would be named Zune (http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=technologyNews&storyID=2006-07-22T174806Z_01_N22174819_RTRUKOC_0_US-MICROSOFT.xml)
Sounds like the gayest name ever, but then.. it's a Microsoft name!
Yea because anything prefixed with 'i' is automatically cool. Atleast contribute something to the discussion you're starting.
Now, I personally think Microsoft needs to stop this kind of stuff. They're trying to enter too many markets too quickly withought anything substatial to back them. Atleast wait until they have a popular MP3 player out or can offer something like Non-DRM or cheaper downloads or something.

I never said I liked the name 'iPod' either, now did I? If you're going to assume things, at least assume things properly.

But you didn't say anything about it, now did you?
Point is: You're not contributing anything that can even be discussed. You're just linking an article and posting no feedback on it.
Heh. I think they have the ability to dominate this market. While the iPod may hold a huge share of the portable media market, if you look how quickly and easily they came to dominate the browser market (Netscape was annihilated, and now Mozilla is trying to take back the market IE stole from them) and game console market, with some proper timing (releasing in October = good), vendor lock-in (:)), and the proper features and advertisements, they can easily take a large foothold.
Your average user is going to feel more comfortable just buying a Zune versus buying an iPod and installing iTunes, especially if the price is right.
I agree with what you say due to what MS has done in the past but you can't help but think some Microsoft-y stupid feature will fuck it over.
Unless they make it an extension to WMP11 and bundle it with Vista.

What do you mean, "make it an extension"? My iRiver music player (note that iRiver existed before iPod) works with WMP.

A Microsoft feature fucking something up? You must be insane! :p
I don't think they could add in a feature that would fuck over Zune. The only possible downfalls to it are poor design physically, and codec support being all Windows media codecs and nothing more.
But they've seen how that works on the iPod. Let's see if they can learn and improve. ;)

Well I assume this will be able to buy music and interact directly with the player as in add songs directly to it, etc..

Zune will cost $299 and come in three colors, with a 30gb hard drive. It will access files via WiFi.
What if I don't want WiFi?
Why the fuck would you not want WiFi? You can connect to your network and download music directly into it, and you can trade music via ad-hoc networks.
And it's about the same price as an iPod. WiFi is a definite plus.

Then you wouldn't buy the product?
Meh..... I just hope it isn't ugly. Microsoft has been known to make pretty bulky and ugly products.
With the design on the XBox 360, and Vista, I have faith in them.

Wired is faster than WiFi, indefinitely.
I'm holding off on my iPod upgrade (still using 4G, want video) to see if the Zune will have WiFi downloading.

It will. It's gonna be hot.
I really hope Apple releases something with WiFi, or at least announces it. I would wait the extra time for the Apple.

They won't, else they'd never here the end of it from Microsoft zealots.

You're retarded. Seriously. I'd go with the Microsoft product. If you've seen the XBox 360 in action you'd definitely reconsider. If they can make the XBox 360 as amazing as they did, the Zune should not be a problem.
Question: if Apple is so innovative, why didn't they think of WiFi a long time ago when it was booming?
Apparently they did. I don't know what happened to it. (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=745)
Um, well Apple has had more runs at it than Microsoft...it'll be their first one.
Plus since I currently have a Windows laptop I want to get a Mac before I go to college so this way I could have both. Plus, I love my iPod and I think it's a great product with great customer support and I'd just like to continue to give them my business.
