Apparently due to a power surge (BS), MySpace spent a good part of this morning down. (source (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/07/24/1152217&from=rss)).
It seems pretty unlikely to me that a site that big would exist in one location with the possibility of failing. More likely they screwed up an update or something.
Of course, I didn't notice anything, since I avoid MySpace like it has the plague (Oh wait, it does (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/07/21/myspace_adware_attack/)!).
(Disclaimer: I stole that joke from a guy on Slashdot).
Quote from: Tomhello everyone - so there was a power outage in LA yesterday. unfortunately it directly hit the data center where myspace's servers are located. lots of people were affected. the backup power failed and that's why myspace has been screwy since yesterday afternoon. we are still working to get everything back in order. i know what most of the problems are, it's just giong to take awhile to fix them. thx for your patience!
;)
I'm really surprised that they don't have a datacenter in another state.. it's not like they can't afford it, and LA isn't the safest place for servers anyways :)
MySpace is one of the crappiest websites ever. It is stupid. A multi-billion dollar corporation backing it up and there are CONSTANT errors & glitches...totally ridiculous
Violent coincidence or...
ACT OF GOD?
I want to make a bumper sticker that says "Even God hates MySpace. Remember 07/22/2006"

Interestingly enough is the fact that I either completely missed this so called 'outage' or it displayed the standard myspace maintence message which hints at their servers not really losing power...
How many websites do you know that have multiple datacenters hosting them iago? Further more how many websites made by complete retards do you know who know how to setup multiple datacenters to host a single page? :p
BTW Newby, using a website has very little to do with how good it is. I for one can live with the myspace bullshit because it allows me an easy way to talk with the majority of the people I know from school online. Beyond that is really is rather useless.
*note: I don't really get the full myspace experience because I've adblocked half of the shit on myspace. Sadly I think myspace entries make up like 3/4ths of my adblock list...

I doubt they really lost power, it's more likely that they botched an update.

Of the top-10 visited/ranked sites? I'd guess all of them. This is no minor site, after all.

From what I've seen so far they do development on the production servers so 'botching' an update in the manner that you suggest is unlikely. I'd suspect that they probably got hacked and want to cover it up. After all myspace breaks all the time, breaking from something new is no big deal.
Maybe, but then again I think most of the top ranked sites have been around for awhile and as such have competent admins something myspace definitely doesn't have.

This is why Myspace was down this morning.
Do you think anyone committed suicide over this?
Too bad it wasn't down forever.
its still being so gay :(
I was at camp on the 22nd, I think. What happened?
