Holy balls. That's a huge drop. I wish they'd have done it sooner to compete with Intel, but at least they dropped prices a lot. AMD X2 5000+ for ~$300?! Damn.
It is sad they slashed the prices THAT much. They don't slash the prices to the point that they make no profit... you can see how much profit they were making in the first place.
Perhaps the new Montecito Dual-Core Itanium (http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,126432,00.asp) chip Intel released provoked this. Or purchasing ATi gave them a confidence boost that people need to cash in on. :P
Well, this makes me not want to buy an Intel chip again, and owning my video card company of choice... Yeah, AMD and ATI, thanks.
And a new line of Opteron's coming out soon?! (http://www.pcworld.com/resource/article/0,aid,126565,pg,1,RSS,RSS,00.asp)
This is like, too good to be true.
And haha @ Tory buying an AMD like two days ago. OUCH.
Anyone know where I can find a list of all the price-slashed processors? (Intel and AMD) I've had several people ask me what to get recently for building their own, a list of the ones with price slashes should be an easy indication of best bang for the buck!

I believe that by slashing the listed price of the processors they are talking about the bulk prices that they release in lists for their direct customers. You can find the most recent ones online for AMD (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_609,00.html) and Intel (http://www.intel.com/intel/finance/pricelist/july_27_06_1ku_price_final_web.pdf)(PDF) but those are the prices for ordering in quantities of 1000. While it may not show you the street price you will be paying, discounts there will most certainly lead to discounts at the store.

My Comp Sci buddy. We care because it's humorous that he just lost money, plus you obviously care because you asked. :)

Joe, I'll say this once and I'll say it as nice as I possibly can: NOBODY GIVES A SHIT ABOUT PEOPLE YOU KNOW IN REAL LIFE.

Thanks, that helps (especially the Intel pdf!). I would never quote anyone a price unless I was building it myself ;) Now to read some reviews
