Title: Hallowe'en Costume
Post by: iago on October 21, 2006, 09:50:26 PM
I'm going to see a show on Oct 31, so I figured I'd better pick a costume.  Because dressing up is retarded, and I don't want to spend money, I decided to go with the same thing as Tiny from House of 1000 Corpses:

I got a white shirt, with red and black fabric paint.  I'll take a picture of it when it's done.

<edit> I tried to clear up the picture a little.  It says "Cheap All Halloween Costume"

Me and Newby might be going to a PC Deathsquad house show on the 28th, which is also a costume show.

Not sure if I can go, but I, as well, would need a costume.

I am not dressing up. I'll wear my Exodus tshirt, my ripped jeans, and shoes.

Since when does Halloween have an apostrophe in it?

Since long before it didn't have an apostrophe.

Remember, Hallowe'en is short for All Hallows' Even(ing), and to legally remove the "v" from "evening", you have to replace it with an apostrophe.

I like to stick with the proper (fine, classic) spelling

(Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween) has a blurb which basically says the same thing as me[/url])

QuoteThe term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe'en, is shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the evening before "All Hallows' Day"[2] (also known as "All Saints' Day").
WRONG!  All Hallows means All Souls, NOT All Saints.  All Saints Day is November 1st!!!!!

Somehow I managed to not see the phrase 'evening before' every time I read it...

Also, Hallows is derived from the Latin word for holy or something. Like in the KJV (or some translation) the Lord's prayer starts out as "Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name". So yeah, Saint and Hallowed One are basically the same.

According to Merriam Webster, the etymology lies mostly in old english.

Well, I found a font I liked, printed it off in big letters, and mounted it on cardboard. I put the cardboard in the shirt to help hold the form, and got out the paint.  I mixed red and black to get a bit of a browny blood colour.  I traced the letters, let it dry, and done!

Here's how it looks:

(For more pictures, go here (http://www.javaop.com/~ron/ospap/show_category.php?category_id=37))

I showed it to my family.  First thing they asked was where I bought it.  They didn't believe me that I made it myself till I showed them the template.

It worked out good! :D

What kind of paint did you use?

@ Quik and Towelie: :-) -- it didn't even take me very long!

Just some generic fabric paint I found at a local craft store.  All I could find was "rose" and "ebony", so I mixed them to make brown.

I think I might have to go get me some of this to paint up a shirt for the GWAR show. =)

Haha, that'd be great!

It's actually really easy and really cheap, here's what I spent:
$3 - Package of 3 white shirts
$8 - 2 paint things, which I used maybe 1/4 of
--
$11

I already had good cheap paint brush, so tack on maybe $2 for those.

And best of all, it really looks good!  Even just tracing looked good, using a stencil would be even better.  But I wanted the half-assed look.

My friend wants me to make him a "Who Farted?" t-shirt (like Booger from Revenge of the Nerds always wore)

That sounds like an appropriate amount to spend on a Halloween costume.  +10 points for not taking Halloween too seriously but also not being a douche that doesn't dress up :)

+10 points to your friend, Dudley Dawson is one of my favorite characters from Nerds, besides Poindexter and his Psychedelic violin playing.
